Travelling across country can anybody recommend somewhere to stop for an hour or two to break the journey?

Many thanks

Thank you so much ICOD - we're travelling from Bristol to Brighton. Its an awful journey and we tend to go cross country rather than motorway.

Either a pub with soft play, swimming complex anything really we're open to suggestions

Love the look of the Rapids place.

The route finder on AA.Com takes us A36 route down to M27 then across.

Thanks for your great suggestions. Hubby spent over an hour looking told him Mumsnet would help!!

Other option is a different route stopping at Marwell Zoo? We wouldn't get there till roughly 1pm and looking at map its huge so may be waste of money?

Thanks Icod

Argh...don't go to The Lamb unless you are prepared to remortgage your home to pay for the meal .

Stourhead is lovely.

If things are getting a bit 'heated' in the car and the DCs are driving you mad there is always the option to take them to Longleat and feed them to the lions .

Chipstick · 27/12/2007 22:11

Longleats closed so not an option which is a shame as we adore Longleat.

Will give all options to hubby I drive he navigates so god knows where we'll end up

The Hawk Conservancy is a fantastic place to visit - on the A303 by Andover - great way to spend a day watching the birds of prey being flown and you can get a lovely meal in their cafe too. Very cheap to get into.

Portsmouth is nice - some lovely places to sit and eat by the beach/water front - especially good eating by the spinnaker tower where you can sit and watch the ferries come in and out.

Alvestoke Bay is lovely (Portsmouth) - great parking and really nice place to walk up and down the beach - again with a fantastic little cafe.

Portsmouth to Brighton is a good road. Not too busy normally.

Well if you take a slightly wrong turn and end up near Ringwood then Moors Valley Country Park is fab if the weather isn't appalling.

I used to go there in all weathers. I took my DDs in the pouring rain a few months ago and they had so much fun they didn't notice the weather at all.

whispywhisp · 27/12/2007 22:58

Oh yea...I forgot Moors Valley - brilliant place - great place to run around, lots of nature walks, wooden play areas dotted around - if you've got a dog they can run around too - fantastic play area (huge sand pit etc) and great cafe - AND!!!!...free parking at this time of year!!!

coby · 27/12/2007 23:08

My God!!!! Free Parking at Moors Valley??????? Surely not!! I'm amazed, it's blimen expensive when they do charge...but still a great place to go so worth it really.

Whispy, do you live near there?

whispywhisp · 27/12/2007 23:11

It's free parking all year apart from the Summer holidays/Bank Hols - good isn't it? Mind you its such a great place to visit so I wouldn't mind paying a few quid to park anyway!

I live about an hour's drive from MV so really handy for a day out and to get the kids to run off their energy!
