Visiting Edinburgh - disabled options

Danielle2500 · 20/10/2021 12:36

I am visiting Edinburgh in November with a few friends - one of my friends cannot walk a lot due to her condition (she is not wheelchair bound but walking very slow, can’t climb stairs etc).
Any recommendations about places we can visit/activities we can do bearing her condition in mind would be much appreciated :)

Princes Street and Haymarket are relatively flat and give good views of the castle. Gardens and National Gallery are along there. The tram operates in that area too, Royal Yacht Brittania is accessible but a bus/taxi ride away at Leith.

The Scotch Whisky Experience is brilliant but your friend will need to be dropped at the front entrance in a taxi as it’s on a steep incline and there’s a lot of cobbled pavement. Once inside, it’s mostly level, she can go at her own pace and there’s a lift available to access the upper area.
The National Museum of Scotland has a step-free entrance and lifts to get between the floors. The café on the roof has great views of the city.
At the castle, I’ve seen members of staff using a mobility vehicle to give lifts to those who find steep slopes difficult.
Museum on the Mound is all level.
Flat access to Princes Street Gardens is from the far side via King’s Stables Road, while the paths in the gardens themselves are smooth and mostly level.

You can borrow mobility scooters at the botanic gardens.
HOHO bus tour.
It’s a hilly city with a lot of cobbles, steps and less than great condition pavements! A single bus fare is only £1.80 capped at £4.50 for a day ticket. Lothian buses have an app which might be useful for hopping around the city.
