What to do in and around Liverpool

We are taking our son to Liverpool for his birthday to see Anfield, but thinking of going for a few days in half term. I've never been to Liverpool so does anyone have any recommendations of what to do there for a family children aged 6,9,14 ( especially things if it's raining)

Also as it's half term was wondering if there is any where to visit near by to extend our stay.

We are coming from Bath and don't often go to that side of uk !

Moose coffee is great on Hope St for pancakes and big breakfasts.

Where are you staying 41sunnydays?
Might narrow down the food recommendations a bit

Quirky corner is also brilliant fun for the whole family

Live a stones throw from Crosby Beach. Another Place is worth a look and there's also a watersports centre and a big adventure playground on the Marine park. Some nice places to eat around there.
I would recommend a trip on the Open Top tour bus then you'll see all over the city. Taking the ferry to New Brighton is great but a bit blowy at this time of year! I like The Baltic Triangle with it's huge retro arcade and vintage Market.
Also second everything pp's have suggested. It's a great city.

All the standard national chains in Liverpool 1 - but Bold St (v central) and Lark Lane (if you go to Sefton Park have lots of great independents.

DFOD · 05/10/2021 13:44

We love www.mowglistreetfood.com/ on Bold St

DFOD · 05/10/2021 13:46

We also love, love, love www.tigerrockliverpool.uk/ on North John St.

There are so many wonderful restaurants

mdh2020 · 05/10/2021 14:24

Take a ferry ride on the Mersey
We always go out by train to Port Sunlight . Last time we had a guided tour of the village. I also love the art gallery there.

Have been to a few of these restaurants in The Georgian Quarter (nr Hope Street) - all well established and popular.

Also both of the cathedrals are well worth a visit - especially if you are looking to get in out or the rain …. Both are very sensory and atmospheric in their own right. Just beside the Anglican cathedral is an old gothic cemetery which is well worth a ramble.

I love a trip to Liverpool.
We are planning a weekend trip for my sisters birthday in December.
Liverpudlians are very similar to Glaswegians, you always receive a warm welcome.

SnapDragonQueen · 05/10/2021 15:36

Moose do a good breakfast. Casa Italia is lovely as well but usually has a queue. I don't think you can book in advance at Casa Italia.

If you were looking further out from Liverpool the Fun Arena in burscough would be good for the kids. There's some really nice eating places in Burscough (the Hopvine and on the wharf). Ormskirk is good for food too - it's only a little market town so not much there for kids apart from food places.

This is a great thread, thank you. I'm going to be in Liverpool over half term with three teenagers - we were meant to be staying with my friend and hanging out with her family, but she's going to have to go overseas to visit her mother who isn't well. As the trains are booked, we're going to go anyway and house sit, but it does mean I need to conjure up an itinerary, as there won't be other people around to entertain my lot.

I'm going to take copious notes from this, but would love to know any teen specific suggestions that will wow and delight them. We have dinner booked at Mowgli one night and I was thinking of the Beatles Experience for them, but any other suggestions welcome. They are all interested in music, not so much in football, and would love a bookshop or something tech related.

When is your half term week?

KeepingOnKeepingUp · 14/10/2021 16:14

The week after next (25th). I saw the Rivers of Light festival - we'll definitely check that out.

hotmess19 · 14/10/2021 17:10

Food wise I’d recommend American pizza slice. Apart from that everything already mentioned in brilliant!

KeepingOnKeepingUp · 14/10/2021 17:35

Really looking forward to it - I've got a list (comic book shopping, Mersey Ferry, Anthony Gormley, Slavery Museum, Quirky Corner, Cathedrals, Tate Liverpool, either the Beatles Experience or the British Music Experience. Plus some great restaurant recommendations.
They are going to be exhausted!

Under 18s are welcome until 8pm - it’s only £5 … well worth going - great atmosphere

A few people have recommended this to me - a bit different

User135644 · 14/10/2021 18:01

I'd recommend this new sky bar that's just opened: www.explore-liverpool.com/first-look-of-gino-dacampos-new-360-sky-bar-at-innside-liverpool/

Some of the best views in the city and good food.

Not been - but this might be something different for teens

Not sure how far away this is but being Halloween - teens might be up for something like this

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 14/10/2021 20:23

almost famous

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 14/10/2021 20:26

Pressed too soon, they do all sorts of unusual burgers. British Music experience was good, it’s two rooms, one with history/costume and one with instruments you can try out.
Second hand record shops if they like vinyl, not sure if the Jacaranda fits the bill?
