What to do in and around Liverpool

We are taking our son to Liverpool for his birthday to see Anfield, but thinking of going for a few days in half term. I've never been to Liverpool so does anyone have any recommendations of what to do there for a family children aged 6,9,14 ( especially things if it's raining)

Also as it's half term was wondering if there is any where to visit near by to extend our stay.

We are coming from Bath and don't often go to that side of uk !

Liverpool is great. You've got several free museums all within a walk of each other including the world museum the museum of Liverpool and the maritime museums.

All are free and pretty interesting. Albert dock is good to have a walk round, they offer water sports on the dock for all ages (the company is called wild shore I think) and there's plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from.
Smugglers cove is good with it being pirate themed.

You can also walk along the front to see any cruise ships in. It's worth having a look online to see if any of the Disney ships are due to be in dock as they often put on firework displays.

You can also jump on the ferry over the Mersey to the Wirral. They do river cruises but not sure where they stop.

Liverpool one is the shopping centre if you like shopping it has hamleys toy shop, a Disney store and a Lego shop so a few things for the younger one if shopping is your thing. Handily a lot of it is all undercover in case of bad weather.
There is also an indoor golf course called junkyard golf although I think under 18snare only allowed In sun-thurs.

Within easy distance is Knowsley Safari Park for when the weather might not be the best as you can do as many times round in your car as you want.

Imagine that is a great place for your youngest if you needed to split the ages up. I just took my seven year old and it's brilliant, the 9 year old might just be a tad too old. It's a hands on science discovery place and was a fantastic afternoon for us.

Liverpool is a fantastic often overlooked city.
Loads to see and do.
Great night out too,
Bold Street in the city centre neat the Bombed out church and Lark Lane a short drive out of the city are great for food.
This place in Bold street is excellent
laparrillaboldstreet.com
Leaf and Crust are good too
Knowsley Safari Park is good
If you have time NorthWales is excellent.
You could possibly see Blackpool lights its not every ones cup of tea but you might like it.
Some ideas here

I would do this speed boat trip its fantastic as they will take you to parts of the dock with no speed limit if you are up for it, or just a sedate cruise around.

We were in Liverpool over the summer at DD 13, loved The British Music Experience.

Lj8893 · 30/09/2021 20:36

In the daytime children are allowed in The Cavern Club, they quite often have live music on in the daytime and it’s great fun. Especially if you are Beatles fans!

Lj8893 · 30/09/2021 20:38

The Albert dock is great to wander round.
Me and DD 7 loved the World museum.
The cat cafe do child friendly mornings, which was lovely.

Blackpool isn’t far and albeit as tacky as you can imagine it is, it’s bloody brilliant fun!

meadowbleu · 30/09/2021 20:41

How are you travelling OP, will you have your own car available or be using public transport?

winnieanddaisy · 30/09/2021 20:42

Don't forget to see the 2 cathedrals. Anglican and Roman Catholic, either end of Hope Street . You will also be within about half an hours drive of Chester Zoo . Also check out what shows will be on at The Empire or The Everyman or any of the other theatres . There is absolutely loads to do and see . Have a lovely time .

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 30/09/2021 20:51

Crosby Beach for the Another Place sculptures. These are unmissable and always a hit with children of any age. Wrap up warm, though!

If possible and affordable book to see whatever’s on at the Everyman Theatre. Wonderful new theatre, great plays, ferocious audience.

Hope Street is important. Walk from the Catholic Cathedral at one end, to the Anglican Cathedral at the other. Feel grateful to be in the midst of such boundless magnificence.

Oh, Almost forgot Sefton Park Palm House. Glorious.

There's an indoor funfair at the exhibition centre over half term.
If it's a clear day you could go up to the top of St John's Beacon - there's great views of the whole city and beyond. You can definitely see Anfield from up there.
If you want something a bit different you could go along the coast to Crosby Beach and see Antony Gormleys statues which are there. There's some nice restaurants in Crosby too

This is an amazing experience - especially if the weather is grim - v dramatic and atmospheric.

So much in the above link. Really amazing city ….. The Palm House in Sefton Park is beautiful if you want to duck in out of the rain.

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 30/09/2021 21:10

Beacon is a great shout, £5 each I think.
Beautiful beaches at west Kirby as well.
Go back via North Wales - Llangollen railway, Moel Famau, Portmeiron?
World museum has an AI exhibition.
Bold st and castle st have loads of great suggestions as pp have said. Have a look at Almost Famous for burgers - might be popular with the 14 yo.
There’s two food halls GPO and Duke Street with ordering via app so you could order something for everyone.
Lots of street art and things in the Baltic triangle - and food at the Baltic market.
Just seen where my priorities lie, eating and drinking!
Fab city, usually great weather apart from the wind chill but I am from the south Grin

Scouser on the thread says Lark Lane and Sefton Park are as is the Baltic Market. Chester is a nearby city and also well worth visiting, as well as all of the other places mentioned. Definitely recommend Crosby beach and also Formby pinewoods (one of the only places you’ll find red squirrels and also provides access to Formby beach).

Have fun!

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 01/10/2021 00:19

Theres an amazing crazy golf in Liverpool one........ There's too much to list tbh. Beaches, museums, boat trips, the Anthony Gormly statues on the beach. The street art and prom at new Brighton I could go on all day.
We love the place and are frequent visitors.

Crazzzycat · 01/10/2021 00:25

Chester Zoo is just over half an hour away from Liverpool and well worth a visit.

CrumbleLady · 01/10/2021 00:37

Half an hour in the car to the Crocky Trail too. Take clothes you can get mucky in and you'll have a blast.

IHateCoronavirus · 01/10/2021 00:53

If you are national trust members Speke Hall is lovely for a picnic.
They have a lovely woodland trail based on a local giant called the Child of Hale (true story). Gets muddy so bring suitable footwear.
It’s right near the airport if any of the kids like planes. When you are in the maze they literally take off next to you.

simitra · 01/10/2021 01:00

Another scouser here! I live in another city now but I still miss the people and the humour.

What ever you are doing people in Liverpool are not like those down south who will look through you if a "random" person talks to them at a bus stop or in a queue. Liverpool people are notably friendly and will always chat.

Have a great day out.

SiliconHeaven · 01/10/2021 01:02

Has nobody recommended the ferry? Go to the Albert Dock, the new museum and then take the ferry trip.

41sunnydays · 01/10/2021 10:53

Wow thank you so much for all the suggestions. There are so many I am wondering whether to extend to 3 nights Smile

It's a wonderful place @41sunnydays and going by car you have so many opportunities around and about. You'll definitely be spoilt for choice and your son will lose his heart to Anfield.
