Holiday cottage areas within reasonable distance of Heathrow and Gatwick for Christmas?

Hoping for help from Mumsnetters. Haven't seen family in 2 years and counting thanks to the rona. We could all fly in to England for Christmas to meet up without quarantining (fingers crossed for negative tests although we are all fully vaccinated so should be fine.).

What areas to the west or south of London should I look for holiday cottages? NOT in London itself and I don't want to have to cross London to get to the place. Bear in mind we'll be coming off a 10 hour flight with small children so we're not going to trek to Cornwall or something like that. Some will be flying into Heathrow and some into Gatwick so we're looking for a reasonable journey from both.

Main purpose of trip is to be together so doesn't matter too much what amenities or attractions are locally.

Also recommendations for websites to find cottages once we've established an area to search would be great.

Thanks Smile

I think I'd look along the A272 in the South Downs National Park. There's some lovely places. Penshurst?

It’s about an hour from both airports to the New Forest.
There’s also Blackwood Forest. Some of the lodges have four bedrooms and you can request multiple lodges next door to each other www.forestholidays.co.uk/locations/hampshire/blackwood-forest/accommodation/golden-oak/
