Holiday in Teignmouth

This year, we have a cottage booked for two weeks in Teignmouth, Devon at the start of the school holidays.

There will be me, DH and 7year old son. I have been looking into things to do in the area and can see there is a huge amount.

We will do beaches/walks/parks etc. And the marble factory. But, with covid, lots of places currently require advanced booking - I know restrictions are supposed to end this month but I have a feeling places still may be book ahead.

So, I am looking for some recommendations of the best things to visit as I am considering booking a few things before we go so we can guarantee a visit. Some days we will leave free for beaches etc. Obviously tricky booking ahead without knowing what the weather will do but may have to chance it.

Depends on the budget for doing things, Paignton zoo is good, and I Kents cavern in torbay, and a trip to the moors, steam train trip?

Lynton and Lynmouth is a nice place to visit with a cable car linking Lynton on the top of the cliff with Lynmouth at the bottom.

Definitely Paignton Zoo and the steam train. Becky Falls is lovely too.

Babbcombe in Torquay is good too - the model village is good, and there is also a cool cliff railway down to the beach.

Dawlish Warren is good if you have a 7 year old, really great beach and then a big fun fair there as well, and you can also then walk along the nature reserve/spit towards Exmouth.

I've just typed this on another thread, go to Woodlands, it's great. I love it it has a luge. We have been in torrential rain and still had a good time!

I live in Teignmouth - you'll have a lovely time in the summer.

What sort of things are you thinking? Paignton Zoo / Crealy / woodlands / world of country life would all be good for a 7yo boy which need booking. Some lovely national trust places in the area too.

The lido in Teignmouth is closed this year but the one in Kingsteignton is lovely apparently. Check tide times as hide tide in Teignmouth leave you with very little beach except around the pier. Dawlish Warren is a beautiful beach but to avoid the masses, walk through the nature reserve and come out at the groynes further up for acres of space and peace.

Some things we like which you don't need to book:

• Getting the boat across from back beach to Shaldon and go through smugglers tunnel to the Ness beach
• rent a boat from the back beach
• crabbing on the quay
• walk the sea wall out toward Dawlish
• visit the black swans in Dawlish
• Dawlish Warren beach
• Exmouth beach
• the pier arcade
• Jurassic mini golf on the front

I ❤️ this part of the world. I would highly recommend dartmeet, a lovely picnic spot by the river with stones that you can jump across. There is also a little cafe called badgers holts for an afternoon tea.

We did a week in Teignmouth at Easter. As others have said, Dawlish Warren is a great Sandy beach and has a small fairground.

Dawlish town has a nice river through it with lots of exotic ducks, including black swans and is free to visit.

There's a good pier and free multi age play area called Geopark at the seafront at Paignton, and another sandy beach too.

Teignmouth itself can an interesting back beach area, where the boats are tied up, the beach itself is mixture of sand and stone really. There's also a smaller pier, crazy golf and excellent playground on the sea front.

My daughter loved Pennywell farm when we stayed in Devon. She also spent hours in the playground on the front in Teignmouth.

I second the PP who suggested Babbacombe - the model village is a really good one, you can park right by it and walk a little way along to the cliff railway down to the beach (if there are queues - which there were in half term - there's a path/road). Lovely cafes at the top and the bottom.

I have been to Paignton or Dawlish for several years in a row. I recommend

Geopark playpark on Paignton seafront
Paignton beach is usually quite quiet if you go to the left of the pier.
Paignton Pier
Teignmouth playpark and splash area (not sure if water bit open)
Dawlish Warren, great beach and funfair type area
Paignton Zoo - accessible by bus
Babbacombe Model Village - accessible by bus
Dawlish for a stroll around and admire the ducks - and get something to eat from Gays yummy I also recommend the Ugly Ducking for food.

Trago Mills at Newton Abbot for a shopping day if it rains - they sell everything you can think of including the kitchen sink.
There used to be a funfair on Paignton Green every year, but don't know what is happening currently with covid.

Oooh yes, Buckfast Abbey is good (I think you can get there by steam train to Buckfastleigh if I remember correctly?) and you can also stock up on your tonic wine essentials whilst you are there

The funfair at Paignton is still there at the moment or it was in half term anyway.

I have booked Paignton zoo as DS really wants to go there. Also Bygones anf Babbacombe model village. Plus lunch the day we arrive and two other meals

So, doing quite well! We want to go to the house of marbles but you can't book that one so will just go early one day.

This is the area I was brought up and visited often to see my Dad with our kids. Brixham is lovely and you can walk up to Berry Head which has beautiful views. There are great boat trips for sight seeing or fishing and the Rockfish Cafe on the seafront is good. You can take the passenger ferry from Teignmouth to Shaldon and then walk to The Ness down the smugglers tunnel.
Visit Dartmoor and park at the visitors centre at Haytor walk up and admire the views, see the ponies and go to the quarry with the granite railway.
The steam railway is great for kids as is a boat trip down the Dart from Totnes. Our kids loved Goodrington beach for rock pooling. There is so much to do you will only scrape the surface. Have a great time.
