East Devon Sandy beach

I have found accommodation in east Devon for a summer holiday but am now trying to find out where there are Sandy beaches near there please? My search so far only shows me pebble or shingle mixed with sand. One of my children has sensory difficulties and can only tolerate sand! I only know Lyme Regis which I think is Sandy?

Sandy Bay

Exmouth is sand if you go down orcombe point end. More shale up the other end.

Seaton, Sidmouth and Budleigh salterton are all rocky beaches.

Going the other direction though dawlish is a beautiful sand beach.

Sandy bay is part of Haven and I believe you have to be staying there to use the beach.

I live in East Devon in Exmouth which is indeed a sandy beach and the only one that is sandy in East Devon. Sidmouth has a bit of a sandy beach but not much and the rest of the beaches in East Devon, although beautiful are all pebble beaches. Exmouth is definitely sand though not shingle apart from the beach near the marina which is used more for dog walkers.

Sandy bay is a beach that joins onto Exmouth beach belonging to haven Devon cliffs. It can be walked to when at low tide from Exmouth beach or walk along the coast path to it like I did from my house last week. It's definitely open to the public all year round, as us locals go there a lot and there's public footpaths going through the site.

Exmouth is a very long sandy beach which would be your best bet, if not Dawlish Warren is a beautiful sandy beach with a nature reserve which is about a 30/40 mins drive from East Devon way.

Also Lyme Regis, although in West Dorset it does border East Devon and has a sandy beach as well as single and stones. It's a long beach and really beautiful but gets very busy in the summer

Thank you for these messages. The accommodation is hawkchurch resort near axe minster. I will look up these beaches.

@Jelly0naplate it's not as sandy as it used to be - the sea wall works have dragged up a lot of rock! Coryton Cove is still nice and sandy though!

EBearhug · 11/05/2021 23:27

Hawkchurch to Lyme isn't far.

Sidmouth has a lot more sand than it used to - or it did last summer! But yes, the best fully sandy beach would be at Exmouth.

Sidmouth has some sand at low tide.
Exmouth is lovely.

Thank you. We lost the accommodation by nit booking in time so are now staying near Shaldon? I will start a new thread asking about that area!
