Restaurants in Edinburgh?

Any recommendations for restaurants in Edinburgh?
For couples :)

They are all shut for 16 days from last weekend I think. Cafes still open but no alcohol.
When open, higher end I rate Continis George st and the Brasserie at the Balmoral; for cheap and cheerful Bar Italia Lothian Road or Taste of Italy (near John Lewis).

Morgana7 · 18/10/2020 15:41

If you’re wanting somewhere quite fancy then The Witchery, Angels With Bagpipes or The Kitchin are all great.
For a bit less expensive but still really nice I would recommend Dishoom, The Outsider or Bon Vivant

ApolloandDaphne · 18/10/2020 15:42

What sort of level of restaurant are you looking for and when do you plan to go?

CraftyGin · 18/10/2020 15:44

The last one I went to was Montpeliers in Bruntsfield. Good for ladies who lunch.

TheDuchessOfAquitaine · 18/10/2020 15:48

Thai - Dusit or Noks Kitchen. Chinese - Karen’s Unicorn. Dishoom nice for Indian street food, Mother India. Fishers in the city for seafood.

GrandColombier · 18/10/2020 15:48

Taisteal in Stockbridge is fab find, not showy but the chief has had a Michelin star at a previous place and the food is incredible and really creative.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/10/2020 15:56

My DH and I have enjoyed: Timberyard, The Witchery, Dishoom and Fishers. I can't recall the names of other ones we have been to. If you like Thai then my DH loved Chaophraya but I haven't eaten there (sadly!).

Tomorrowisanewday · 18/10/2020 16:01

Dishoom, Dusit, El Cartel and Bon Vivant in the centre. First Coast is 5 minutes up Dalry Road from Haymarket, and is worth the walk.

As others have said, they are all closed until the end of the month.

DialSquare · 18/10/2020 16:04

I second The Kitchin and also Number one at the Balmoral for fine dining.

CraftyGin · 18/10/2020 16:06

Need to know what price point the OP is looking for. Very few people would be looking at the Balmoral or Witchery. We can all reel off the top restaurants we have never actually been to.

rookiemere · 18/10/2020 16:12

Six by Nicos is great if you can get a reservation. £29 for six courses.

BlueHawaii · 18/10/2020 16:16

Hewats on the Mile-used to be called Dubh Paris. Really lovely and authentic!

Sinead543 · 18/10/2020 16:23

Just asking in advance because I want to (eventually) book a weekend away

I wanted to go end of January before baby arrives but not sure if it’ll happen now, but still wanted to look into what’s good up there.

All price range as I’d like to go to at least one fancy restaurant and then the other nights maybe more local restaurants but still nice

I've been to both the restaurants I mentioned on more than one occasion. I've also been to the Witchery which was very nice but not as good as the other two. I wouldn't recommend something I've not used or been to. I've also been to KFC and McDonald's in Edinburgh but I doubt the OP is interested in them.
Morgana7 · 19/10/2020 08:48

I’ve also been to all the ones I mentioned such as The Witchery and The Kitchin.
I grew up in Edinburgh and we would go to places like that for things like my mum or dad’s decade birthdays etc.
Don’t know why the pp made the presumption that we hadn’t been to them before?!

I'm pretty sure it's not. It also has a long waiting list too.

I've been to all the above mentioned restaurants, apart from Nicos. Love Fishers and Fazenda too.

rookiemere · 19/10/2020 11:21

@Othering pretty sure it is as we went two weeks ago and it says so on the website www.sixbynico.co.uk/edinburgh/sicily/
As OP isn't going until January it might be possible to get a reservation if she books now .

emmathedilemma · 19/10/2020 11:25

If you want to go somewhere fancy like the Witchery then you get a much better deal at lunchtimes rather than the evening. If you're looking as far ahead as January then I would wait til nearer the time and see what the current restrictions are and what businesses survive as some have already closed down. You will not be short of places to eat for any range of cuisine and budget.
Have a look on Trip Advisor www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g186525-Edinburgh_Scotland.html

Sister place to the Witchery, the Prestonfield is another option though it's a little way out from the centre (under £10 taxi ride). Excellent service back in Sept 2019. We dined as part of a DBB deal but I'd definitely go back just for dinner.

Sinead543 · 19/10/2020 15:24

Thank you everyone!
I was planning on organising something as an Xmas present for my partner, obviously with things changing all the time I’m going to wait until probably beginning of December to see what the situation is looking like but thank you for all the recommendations this will be a lot of help if we do end up going

Agree about looking at lunch deals. Pre-covid the witchery used to do lunch for about £30 each I think, and it's really lovely, unique setting. I've no idea about now though.

Well I take it back then! It's a bargain at that price!

Obviously not a restaurant, but we enjoyed eating in some of the pubs off Princes Street. Great atmospheres with lots of locals, local dishes and staff incredibly friendly and helpful.

SpanishGoatFlower · 25/10/2020 09:18

New Chapter food is delicious and great value, especially for lunch
