UK contingency plan - help!

Hi all,

We (me & daughter aged 17) are due to go on a much needed girls break to the Canaries on 28th August. As things stand we won't be able to go and TUI will likely cancel the holiday. Am desperate to get away and do something - I have the time booked off work and need a break. The trouble is I hardly ever have UK holidays so I really don't know where to start! Am based in the North but could drive wherever. We enjoy chilling out, reading and sunshine and nice food.

Budget around £2k for a week if we get a refund on current holiday - please help me with a back-up plan!

Anyone...please?

Well there's no guarantee of sunshine anywhere you go in the UK unfortunately! In theory, the further south you go, the more chance you have of better weather but it's not always the case.
That's the bank holiday week so I suspect your options might be limited to what you can find available. If you're in the north then I would consider Scotland as the schools here go back this week so you might find there's better availability.
Do you want a hotel, self catering?? That budget should get you a nice self catering property and money still let over to eat out. Or would you rather stay in a hotel that has the option to eat Breakfast & dinner there?
Do you want to be by the coast? Northumberland has some stunning uncommercialised coastline.

Thanks for the reply...would be happy with a nice self-catering apartment/cottage, and by the coast would be good - yes. Appreciate the weather will be hit and miss!

The east coast tends to be drier than the west so North Yorkshire, Northumberland, East Lothian, Norfolk?? North Berwick is lovely, has a great beach and some nice little shops and is only a short drive (park & ride) or train into Edinburgh if you fancied a bit of city action.
I'd get searching and see what you can find available and maybe draw up a short list of options as I suspect you won't have many!

Friend in same situation has just come back from a week in Turkey instead.

They were with Tui and I think they just changed the holiday?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/08/2020 14:20

Yeah changing the holiday is an option - just have to wait for TUI to cancel this one if they're going to do that. Am just concerned at the growing number of cases elsewhere and being in a situation where the travel advice changes while we're abroad. Was looking at Greece but cases seem to be rising there? Have never been to Turkey and unsure what their healthcare is like to be honest so am a bit unsure...

It's a nightmare - this holiday was originally booked in August 2019 for Easter 2020 and I've already had to change it twice!

New forest- I've just got back and it's absolutely beautiful. Was boiling too but that's not a guarantee obviously

LatteLover12 · 10/08/2020 14:46

If it gets cancelled then I think swapping to Greece would be doable.

If you'd rather stay home then the Northumberland coast is beautiful but if you're from the NE you'd probably prefer to go a bit further afield!

EasyJet fly from Newcastle to Jersey and Jersey is beautiful! Maybe worth a google?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 14:49

Greece is in the second wave

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/08/2020 14:52

Thanks...would rather go abroad but Greece is looking iffy as someone has said. Feel like I'm running out of European options!

Jersey is a good shout.

Yes channel isles is a good shout.

Think they were covid free. Not heard anything to the contrary since this was declared.

I'd suggest IoW but I understand their cases have been rising.

Zzz1234 · 10/08/2020 15:34

Forest holidays?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/08/2020 16:13

Wow, Jersey is ££££££££!

Thanks for all the replies.

Guernsey has a 14 day isolation period in force as far as I can tell: www.visitguernsey.com/coronavirus-covid-19-update/
Isle of Wight?

LatteLover12 · 10/08/2020 18:37

Oh no @chocolatesaltyballs22 I didn't realise it would be so spendy!

Hmm... maybe Northumberland might be the way to go! 😂

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/08/2020 09:34

Am now looking at 5 star hotels in Turkey - bit of an about turn!
