Self catering in August

Hi everyone,

We were due to go abroad mid August but decided to postpone a year, so wanted to try and get a cottage/caravan somewhere in this country. Only we've left it a little late and perhaps unsurprisingly, there is very little available, certainly through the popular sites such as cottages.com, sykes, etc. So I'm hoping to find a hidden gem. Not too fussy about where as long as it's nice and clean and preferably not too far from a beach. Have been looking for places in Wales, Isle of Wight, Scilly Isles, Devon, Northumberland, but there's just nothing! Sad. If anyone could recommend any lesser known places that may be available I'd be grateful!

What dates, budget and how many people.

Caster on Sea, Norfolk?

HerLadySheep · 24/07/2020 06:17

The West Bay Cottages on Isle of Wight had some availability, good luck it's been a nightmare trying to get booked in this year.

Try holiday lettings, I've just booked one through that site.

For me I’d be looking at places like west Cumbria or rural Lancashire - bit more off the beaten track but awesome.

Try this company for Northumbria www.northumbria-cottages.co.uk/
Or if you're willing to travel further Scottish state schools are going back on the 11th August so you might find more availability up here.

We've used www.farmstay.co.uk/ in the past and had some lovely holidays. Some of the farms don't show live availability of their cottages so you might have to call. It's a less well known website so you may find something? They do appear to have properties available in August. If you do go on the website, it works way better in desktop mode.

I was going to say NW but not Lakes, like @lovelyupnorth. We are NW and everyone says "how great to be near the Lakes" but frankly we can go elsewhere and avoid the queues and it's just as nice.
If you think you'd be OK with that kind of activity, things like Sandcastle in Blackpool are opening up too. So that would be Fylde/Wyre area.

Northumberland is absolutely beautiful but extremely popular this year so slim pickings for accommodation.

How about Yorkshire, Norfolk, the Peak District, Scotland (east coast area), Cumbria/lakes but maybe try quieter less popular places such as Wasdale/Wastwater areas or Eden Valley.
Try looking at Coastal Retreats for Northumberland or Grace Darling holidays, or Air BnB holiday lettings for a cottage, caravan or alternative accommodation or glamping etc. But look at reviews and do your research on the areas you are thinking of visiting/booking.

Try Wern Farm near Conwy, N. Wales. Cottage and glamping.
Annstead Farm, Beadnell.
National Trust properties
