Train holiday around Scotland?

Has anyone done this? I was just fantasising about rail travel after reading yesterday's Guardian supplement, when I noticed the Spirit of Scotland travel pass. You can travel for 4 days in 8 or 8 days in 15. Children's and railcard discounts apply. It sounds pretty good?

I am just wondering where you might go? We like walking, lakes, beaches, cities, countryside... I probably wouldn't hire a car so would be looking at places that were fairly easy to get to from the train station.

We would probably do a night in Edinburgh on the way up and one in Glasgow on the way back down.

If anyone else is interested, 4 days travel in 8 days was £253 and 8 days travel in 15 was £321 for two adults and two children (age 5-15) with a family railcard.

Since a return ticket to see my family (4 hours away) often costs £250, this doesn't seem too bad!

You can also use ferries and coaches (not buses)

If you plan getting the train to Mallaig, from there, you can get the ferry to Skye, plus a few other small islands, great part of the country if you like all things outdoors - walking, sea kayaking, beach combing.

Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh is lovely too. You might need to check public transport from there.

Thanks @bananacakerox, that's exactly the kind of thing I'd like to do!

We took the train from Inverness to Aviemore and we loved the journey. There are loads of outdoor pursuits at and around Aviemore.
