Quick trip from Edinburgh

I've found myself with a few days off. Can anyone suggest a quick solo trip overnight possibly 2 nights from Edinburgh?

Has to be via public transport and on the cheap side. Happy staying in an Travelodge etc. Somewhere scenic where I can switch off and relax but won't be bored (I'm easily bored).

If you get bored easily, what sort of things do you like doing? Scenic places are often rural so not so many cultural activities.

That is true. Just somewhere with something, even one thing, to 'do' I guess. Maybe a museum, centre, boat trip. I went to Loch Lomond for the day recently, scenery and could go out on the Loch.

Somewhere like Largs? West coast anyway. Would be better from Glasgow but not impossible!

Falkirk Wheel?? Kelpies? They are close enough together to bike it along the canal....that would keep you busy for the day

And have a look on ItIsOn, they always have deals on hotels and meals and stuff...you might get some ideas from there.

Inverness or Perth

Could hop on the bus to Crieff. There a hydro there with lovely grounds to wonder around. You can go in and have coffee /lunch there. Lots of walks and beautiful views and great little town to mooch around.

eyeoresancerre · 30/10/2019 14:57

This is the hydro.

Thanks all! Will look into these suggestions. Accessible from Glasgow is fine too. Never been to Crieff Hydro so will look that up.

What about nipping up to Dundee, visit the V&A, have a nice lunch. The train journey is very nice. Or get the train down to North Berwick.

Pitlochry is a pretty little town easily accessible by train from Edinburgh and punches above its weight in terms of things to do and see. You can look around Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre and Blair Athol Distillery. If you want to explore the surrounding countryside, there’s Faskally Wood in Tay Forest Park. You could stroll along Loch Dunmore or follow any of the signposted paths.

Jump on the train to York. Loads to do and see all within walking distance. Plenty of pubs do inexpensive rooms there.

supercee · 31/10/2019 11:13

I was considering York! Pitlochry too is an option. Did the V&A not too long ago.

If you choose York, the Hotel Kilima is lovely & close to the centre/train station AND it has a pool.

St Andrews!
Lovely train journey and plenty to keep you busy for a day
