Recommendations for Devon

I'm planning an escape over Christmas (sorry to mention it in July !!!) and fancy Devon. We can't even decide on a location let alone North or South coast. We're after a pretty coastal town or village. Somewhere with a few facilities as in shops, pubs/restaurants. We will get out and explore the area but it would be good to have things in walking distance for the evenings. No DC to entertain, just the Ddog !
Any MN wisdom would be very much appreciated

Sidmouth is lovely

South west Devon. Salcombe is lovely in all seasons.

Dartmouth

Exmouth. Definitely.

The beautiful little estuary that leads to wembury bay. With Noss Mayo one side and Newton Ferris the other.. (gorgeous little fishing villages) .. you can walk across on stepping stones when the tide is out.. been going there for 30 years and still find new stuff to see and do.. Plymouth about half an hour away. (Though you would never know)

North Devon is lovely. Woolacombe beach large expanse for dog running, few shops and cafes/pubs. Just up the road is a little village called Mortehoe has lovely dog friendly pubs that make an effort at Christmas, and close to good dog walks on the coastal path.
