My DS got a nasty sting the last time he went swimming on the English south coast a couple of years ago. Heading to Dorset and Cornwall and wondering if they are any more or less prevalent this Summer. My kids will be wearing beach shoes when they go in the sea but I’m not sure if they can sting generally, like on your leg, or if you have to physically stand on them? Any reports from the frontline gratefully received!

hi, i dont know about prevalence in different years, but im pretty sure if you wear beach shoes youll be fine, as the spines stick up when you walk in the sand and thats how they spike you. They dont swim around and point their backs at your legs.

We have worn "sea shoes" (as we call them) since my DH was stung a couple of years ago. It was really nasty and he felt ill for days. As other poster said you stand on them (they bury themselves in sand with their poisonous fin sticking up). Not sure if there are any more or less of them about at any particular time.
However last year we went to west country there were loads of jellyfish in the water on the north and south coast Didn't see any this year you'll be glad to hear.

I got stung once in the med in North Africa when I was a kid. It was agony. I buy beach shoes in decathlon which just gives me the confidence to get in the water.
