Im hoping to taking the family to visit the science museum over a weekend and need really cheap accommodation. Happy to get public transport in from somewhere outside but just don't know London at all. Any suggestions of area to look?

Air bnb.

Sorry that's not an area. Misread your OP.

Depends how cheap - Balham / Bromley and Croydon will all have a premier inn / or travel lodge and good transport to central.
But are you driving? From which direction. I only know south London.

I was going to suggest airb&b too

As for areas what about the hayes area direct trains to paddington or uxbridge is on the metropoliaton line easy to access central london

Try the youth hostels. There's a few in London.

We'd be driving up from the South West. Thanks for the suggestions Ill take a look at them.

Chiswick - easy to drive into from the SW, and on the district line to get you to the museums.
