Edinburgh October with 8 year old

What are your hints and tips for must do visits and meals in Edinburgh with an 8 year old. Planning some mother daughter time during October half term, will fly up and use public transport. Planning on staying in a Premier Inn. Initial thoughts are Castle, Zoo, city bus tour and lunch combined with Britannia. Tia

The Museum of Childhood is great fun. There are lots of hands-on activities and games, including a puppet theatre and dressing up area. Admission is free.
The Witchery Tours are great for children, and aren’t that scary! www.witcherytours.com
Badger and Co is a fun restaurant loosely on Wind in the Willows and has a children’s menu www.badgerandco.com
Coro the Chocolate Cafe is worth a visit.

All of the above, an 8 year old will find them much more fun than the castle & Britannia.

Walk to Arthur's seat, Mary Kings Close, National Museum of Scotland is excellent & free, Greyfriars Bobby, walk up Carlton Hill. We stayed at Premier Inn York Place, very central and walkable to most of the main attractions.

We went last October. The Camera Obscura was brilliant and our kids (age 4 & 5) really enjoyed Brittannia. She would be about the right sort of age for Dynamic Earth - mine wee a bit young.

The best thing was the National Museum of Scotland - so much to see that we went back three times!

Go to the Bank Of Scotland museum - they have £1 million pounds in £20 notes in a huge glass box.
It's free to go in too.

Oh I love Edinburgh! Yes, definitely Dynamic Earth, Arthur's Seat (if the weather isn't too wet and windy), National Museum of Scotland, Jenner's, Royal Yacht Britannia, and have a good walk along The Royal Mile and the streets off it - all those little alleyways are quite atmospheric and fun and there are some good independent shops on Cockburn Street. I love Victoria Street too and the Grassmarket (my kids liked eating at Mamma's pizza, which is an American-style restaurant),
