Place to stay within an hour of Ledbury (Herefordshire, near Malvern)

Hi

Have suddenly got the chance of two child free nights on Sunday and Monday night. We need to be within (relative) spitting distance of Ledbury, so can anyone reccomend somewhere wonderful for us to stay?

Last time we stayed in Ludlow, this time dh is talking about going down to the Gower and finding somewhere. I would like somewhere where we have something to do if the weather is bad ie looking in lovely antique/junk shops, but if the weather is great then we would like to go for walks. Any ideas??

Do they have any rooms at Eastnor Castle?

Bibis · 05/06/2007 22:19

Don't think they do, been to a wedding there and also rather too close to all the dcs , we are really looking for somewhere to just get away from it all. We have 4 rather small children and this is the first time in almost 4 years that we will have some time together, my god we might actually have to talk to each other - help

I would suggest Crickhowell and then dinner at the Walnut Tree Inn, but I think it may have recently closed.

Just checked on website and you're right, I'm not getting very lucky on this am I?

Will end up pitching a tent up the Malverns just to have a bit of peace and quiet oh and breakfast without interruptions

How about going to Cheltenham?

Bibis · 12/06/2007 20:46

Just back from the most amazing time

Stayed in Symonds Yat East in a lovely pub called Saracens Head Inn. Idyllic surrounds, canoed on River Wye, walked, wandered around Monmouth, ate the most delicious food at aforementioned pub and generally had a wonderfully relaxing and childfree time ! (children had a rather nice time with grandparents as well)

I would thoroughly recommend this place, the food was out of this world, the perfect antidote to 4 years without a break .

Thank you to all those who suggested other places, may well try them out when in laws have recovered

We loved The Cottage of Content in Carey, Herefordshire . It's quite remote, but the nice little towns of Herefordshire are in easy reach.

tiredemma · 12/06/2007 20:57

OMG!! I was just about to post about the Cottage of Content.

we stayed there last year and LOVED it! fantastic food and so peacful!!

MarieCeleste · 12/06/2007 20:58

We found out about it through MN - and are suitably grateful.

Corse Lawn Hotel is nice, near to Tewkesbury and if Upton upon Severn, in between Cheltenham, Tewks., Malvern and Gloucester. Ledbury up the road.

If you want antique junk shops I would suggest that area. Also Ross on Wye is pretty close by the hotel and it is a lovely little place.

tiredemma · 12/06/2007 20:59

was it a post by me? or a review by another mumsnetter??

We love it there, need to go back soon for some peace and quiet

BettySpaghetti · 12/06/2007 21:02

Bibis -are you in Ledbury then?
I've never seen anyone from Herefordshire on MN before. We're just over the border in Worcs.

MarieCeleste · 12/06/2007 21:03

Could've been you, Tiredemma. Can't remember now, sorry! Aren't the people who run it lovely?

tiredemma · 12/06/2007 21:08

so nice- dps parents live in hereford and one weekend we went down to visit them ( dp had been off work with stress) - as we got to their house they told us to leave our own bags in the car- took our boys off us and sent us off there to relax!!

owners are lovely, the food is to die for.

Bibis · 12/06/2007 21:13

BS I used to live in Ledbury but am now much further east .

I remember other people talking of the Cottage of Content and will bear it in mind for next time.

I feel like a completely different person now, what a difference a couple of breakfasts without children can make
