South Wales things to do?

Thinking of going to South Wales for a few days in August. We will stay with a friend for one night. What is there to do/see in that area? Would there be enough to do for children 10 & 6?

It depends entirely upon where you stay. If you're near Cardiff, Swansea or the coast, there's heaps to do.

My daughter follows a blogger who mentions loads of family orientated things to do in South Wales. I’ll try to post a link for you by tomorrow.

I've forgotten how to link, sorry. If it rains I'd suggest the LC2 (waterpark) in Swansea and then a wander around the waterfront museum (next door) followed by a walk around the marina. But it all depends where you are.

There are lots of castles in South Wales from Raglan in the East to Kidwelly and Dinefwr in Carmarthenshire to Pembroke and Carew in Pembrokeshire.

You might have to narrow the area down a bit!

If you stay on the coast at Porthcawl or Barry Island, there's lots to do and you'd be within good reach of Cardiff for lots of wet weather activities.

I'd say if you're just doing a night you can't go wrong with Cardiff. Great shopping centre with lots of little arcades, normally something interesting on at the various theatres and venues. It's got some great parks - Roath, especially, where you can take the kids boating. The national museum is very child friendly and the art collection is great for parents. Techniquest science centre is a really good hands-on attraction just right for the ages of kids like yours. Then there's the whole Cardiff Bay area with various types of boat trips and the barrage you can walk along.

You don't say where in South Wales you're going but this is the South Wales I know that is closest to centres of population.
Cardiff Bay development is interesting and my kids loved Techniquest - Hands On science centre. We also loved St Fagans Open Air Museum - you can easily spend a whole day there. Cardiff Caslte and Castell Coch are also lovely to visit and the incredible painted interiors keep children focussed, even those who might not normally be interested in historic buildings. Lovely beaches in between Cardiff and Swansea... try Porthcawl or Barry for beaches, funfair and donkey rides, or Merthyr Matt sand dunes if you like wild. Ogmore Casle and stepping stones are fun and a nice place for a picnic. Swansea waterfront and round to Mumbles are great, and then you e got the huge, stunning beaches of the Gower beyond. We liked Margam country park behind Port Talbot too, even if industrial Port Talbot itself doesn't look too promising. Getting anywhere on that stretch of coast is quick and easy because of the M4.
