Hi there, we had a lovely Scottish Highland trip booked for 3 nights at the end of May - but due to DH's FIL just having had a massive stroke, we're thinking of postponing and going somewhere much closer for 2 nights (didn't want to go far for both FIL and our two young kids who are somewhat confused about what's happened). We'd love any suggestions for somewhere a couple of hours out of London - either a spa, or hotel, village with nice walks, or anywhere really - we're not going to be too fussy. We like eating nice food, but always prefer laid back and no airs and graces, rather than posh and pretentious! And not too expensive either, as we've already paid for lots of our Scottish trip.
Thanks so much.

I meant, my FIL! my DH's father.

Beaulieu Hotel in the New Forest is within walking distance of the station, even when you've got a suitcase! It takes about 1hr45mins on the train from Waterloo including one change. It has an indoor pool, bikes for hire and New Forest ponies grazing directly opposite the front door.

I'd second the New Forest, but suggest The Montagu Arms in Beaulieu. www.montaguarmshotel.co.uk/special_offers_new_forest.html

We stayed here last Easter and loved its old world charm, gorgeous food, most comfortable bed ever, local walks etc.
