Am I unusual that Cornwall didn't really do it for me?

Just that. OK the weather wasn't really great which didn't help, but the scenery wasn't as stunning as I had expected. I think Wales is more stunning, and the lake district.
Did I miss something?

Dashper · 15/08/2017 07:19

Meh. It's not Pembrokeshire.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/08/2017 07:27

makealist you make a very good point - I was scrolling through my instagram yesterday and there were Jamie and jools Oliver tagging Nathan outlaw in their pictures of their family in Cornwall, thanking them for such a wonderful time fashionable indeed.

KERALA1 · 15/08/2017 07:28

Also sometimes detect a weird smugness from some people about going to Cornwall. It's somehow a "worthy" place to take the dc during the summer holidays. A few mums banging on about "memories" and how going back to same (eye wateringly expensive) place in Cornwall year after a year is the correct holiday option when you have children. Those of us that slink off abroad to get some sun are Missing out apparently...

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/08/2017 07:35

I have been 3 times for a holiday in Cornwall. Twice as a child and once a few years ago. It rained everyday we were there.

The last time we went down there was a group of us. Everyone spent the week before telling me how wonderful Cornwall was and I was just unlucky that it rained as it never rains in August.

It rained everyday and because i am vegetarian all I could eat was chips.
It was so miserable everyone returned home after 4 days.

Never ever again

LittleCandle · 15/08/2017 07:40

I'd forgotten about the dreaded Eden project. We went to it the first time I was down (I was lying earlier, I've been down 3 times 10+ hours driving each way) and I thought it was dire. Not helped by the fact I almost passed out in the tropical part (total inability to regulate my body temperature) and DD1 was oblivious to the fact that I was such a funny colour when we reached the 'cool box' that total strangers were clustered around me making sure I was all right, and wanted to continue on in! She loved it, DD2 and I were indifferent.

Truro cathedral is nice and Truro is a nice wee place, but I will never go back there.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/08/2017 07:42

My son absolutely love the Eden Project -so much that I've been there mire than I could ever have imagined I would. Thank goodness for locals passes.

Movingonuppppp · 15/08/2017 07:43

Can't beat Dorset

Twinkie1 · 15/08/2017 07:46

YANBU.

Totally over rated. Beaches crowded and fucking dogs everywhere.

It's v expensive.

Stayed at Ocean Blue and beautiful view of sea became fucking car park every day!

If you've got a big car you'll spend most of your journey breathing in whilst jamming your car into hedges/banks etc at the side of the road to get past other cars.

There are no Waitrose or M&S

Couldn't eat in silent P's chip shop as dared to have sleeping child in pushchair and she was too young to be allowed in his posh restaurant (apparently people save to up there and our child might ruin their special treat) and DH got food poisoning in his pub!

And horrendous traffic on way down, ended up taking 14 hours due to screaming baby and numerous tail backs. Went to Mauritius quicker and cheaper a few weeks later as was so disappointing.

Used to really really love Cornwall but last couple of times I visited I felt that it was too crowded, hideously over commercialised to the point of being tacky, and ridiculously expensive. I am unlikely to rush back - and it makes me feel sad to say that, as it used to be such a special place.

Stillwaitingforsummer · 15/08/2017 07:55

The narrow lanes don't bother me at all tbh. Like pp put, it was nice. But just nice. Not stunning.not outstanding. Not worth the very long drive.

Cornwall seems wilder & exposed than Devon. I breathe a sigh of relief when I get to Devon after being in Cornwall. Devon is so pretty & seems to have more going on there. I do like St Ives & Padstow in Cornwall but South Devon is particularly beautiful.

AgathaRaisonDetra · 15/08/2017 08:00

Twinkie no Waitrose or M&S

I beg to differ. There's a tiny, secret place that nobody has ever heard of that has a Waitrose AND an M&S.

The locals call the place Truro but you won't find it on any maps.

PETRONELLAS · 15/08/2017 08:04

I think the overpriced rubbish pub food and fatigue towards tourists did it for me. I'm never going again. Too far. Devon similar although I prefer the beaches. Love Dorset.

Hayle has an m and s!

AgathaRaisonDetra · 15/08/2017 08:15

And do you know that Ginsters pasties aren't actually made in Cornwall? ???? The horror.

I'm glad to see that people will now be fined for feeding chips to the bastard seagulls. Some tourists people are beyond stupid. And don't get me.started on the drunk swimmers.

Ragwort · 15/08/2017 08:15

I love it but am biased as my parents lived there for 20 years and we had so many wonderful holidays in a very much 'off the beaten track' sort of place. And before we had our DS obviously we went out of season which was much nicer.

Truro is a wonderful city, for years I used to go there just to do my Christmas shopping Grin.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 15/08/2017 08:22

Ginsters pasties are made in Cornwall - the factory is near Callington. And is impeccably clean and tidy. Shame the pasties are shite.

Brighteyes27 · 15/08/2017 08:23

I wasn't a fan of Cornwall either DH went a lot as a child and was full of it. We stayed near Crantock, I was extremely disappointed with Newquay the nearest big place it was like hen and stag central. Tintagel castle was lovely though.
We had dreadful weather the second half of the week which put the tin lid on it for me.
I really love Devon, Northumberland, Scotland, Yorkshire and Lakes much more. I haven't been to the Gower Penninsula which is a long way for us in Cumbria but I would love to camp there as the scenery looks stunning.

Stillwaitingforsummer · 15/08/2017 08:52

I don't like Cornish pasties but DH was very excited about having proper authentic ones. He had one. Then said he preferred ginstersGrin

I hear there's a Waitrose in Saltash too, there may be more. Go to Cornwall in the spring when the high high hedges are full of wildflowers.
I holidayed in Cornwall throughout my childhood and Devon in my children's childhood because it's beautiful and right on my doorstep. Not the best for cars, thank goodness.

I wouldn't travel hours and hours to get there because surely you pass lovely places on the way? There are other parts of the UK which equally beautiful but I wouldn't take two days off my holiday to get there and back.
