Am I unusual that Cornwall didn't really do it for me?

Just that. OK the weather wasn't really great which didn't help, but the scenery wasn't as stunning as I had expected. I think Wales is more stunning, and the lake district.
Did I miss something?

I agree op. I'd take Pembrokeshire over Cornwall any day.

I used to love north Cornwall but it's all a bit vulgar now - expensive cars whizzing down the lanes, pissed trust fund kids etc.

Out of season it's lovely though. Even St Ives, and the surrounding areas, which are beautiful.

Therefore depends where and when you go, I reckon.

Yes - just read headline of thread and thought to myself "yes, Wales is much nicer" then read first post and realise you said the same.

We've just come back from a week in Cornwall. First time we had ever been.

We loved it but it rained everyday and was cold and very windy. I had visions of glorious hot weather but a few of the locals said this is what it's like normally, but winters are milder.

We did the touristy bits we wanted to see, so we won't rush back as its too far. Took 4.5hrs to get there and 7.5 to get back.

I love Cornwall and visit at least twice a year but you have to stay off the beaten track and I wouldn't touch North Cornwall in the Summer unless it's much further towards the Devon border. It's all about knowing where and when to go...the Fal estuary and the Lizard out of season are amazing. Having lived in a very touristy part of Devon I feel the pain of locals during the Summer however essential the money is...

I grew up in Devon so I always wonder why you'd bother with Cornwall when you have to go through prettier Devon to get there. But I may be biased :) though I wasn't born there, just lived there from 3 to uni age. I also think Devonians are friendlier than people from Cornwall though both counties have rude terms for tourists (grockles in Devon-speak).

I am also inconsistent as I would totally drive past the Lake District to get to Scotland and have done many times!

I am sure Cornwall is lovely (haven't been since I was about 19) but it's too busy. Everyone seems to go there and I can't think of anything worse than crowds of tourists. Devon gets very busy as well though but perhaps not quite as bad and the (main) roads are a bit better. If you want beautiful beaches without the crowds Northumberland is the place to go. Or the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland. And some of the Scottish beaches are amazing too.

I like the Channel Islands especially Jersey. Has everything in one small place - beaches, castles, scenery, great places to eat, shops - and feels like you are going somewhere as you have to fly or get the boat to get there.

Stillwaitingforsummer · 16/08/2017 16:43

Doesn't going to the channel Islands defeat the point of staying in the UK though? It's cheaper to go to France by ferry or even fly to Spain than getting to Jersey!

oliversmumarmy "The last time we went down there was a group of us. Everyone spent the week before telling me how wonderful Cornwall was and I was just unlucky that it rained as it never rains in August."

You were lied to. It ALWAYS rains in August.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/08/2017 00:01

I have been in June and September. It was so foggy and rainy and visability was so bad in August that a car drove off the road down a steep drop and had to be winched up

Today in Cornwall (my bit anyway!) it is sunny and breezy with blue skies and a few fluffy white clouds. I can see the sea and the tops of the moors from my window. It is the perfect day for a walk, or surfing, or rockpooling or sitting outside with a coffee. Which is exactly what I am going to do now!

pingu73 · 17/08/2017 10:18

We went in June so out of school hols and after years of going I found the attitude of the Cornish very different. I saw Cornish flags everywhere and there was a real resentment from several places we went.
I asked for a pint in a bar for my husband and the barman an older man in his 50s started to take the p..s out of my accent to entertain the locals.
There were many incidents and I was quite shocked and horrified.we had amazing weather but after going for many years we will not return .i much prefer Somerset

The weather report in my bit is overcast and maybe a bit chilly :/
