Am I unusual that Cornwall didn't really do it for me?

Just that. OK the weather wasn't really great which didn't help, but the scenery wasn't as stunning as I had expected. I think Wales is more stunning, and the lake district.
Did I miss something?

Don't judge Falmouth by one Ukip sign outside Trago Mills. Labour very nearly got in the last election, it's probably the most forward thinking cosmopolitan place in Cornwall!

busyboysmum · 14/08/2017 16:48

We don't bother going down south at all anymore. It seems ridiculously overcrowded. I love Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire, the Lakes. Places where you can go and there are very few people.

Loopytiles · 14/08/2017 16:50

Went to Cornwall many summers as a child and liked it, but now think the scenery and infrastructure in many other, more accessible parts of the UK is nicer. Eg Norfolk, Northumberland, Lakes, Highlands (guess the latter isn't very accessible either!)

realwoodlogs · 14/08/2017 16:54

I used to like Cornwall as a kid, but went at Easter. It was nice. But I now live in Cumbria. Think I've been spoilt for views
, walks, lakes, outdoorsy stuff. And I don't really like the beach/sea.

BorisTrumpsHair · 14/08/2017 16:58

I was there for 2 weeks last year and I think it is exquisite.
Being a peninsular makes it almost island like, which is a big part of its charm. I was there high season, but there were very few crowds - I was pleasantly surprised.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 14/08/2017 17:12

I love hayle/ gwithian

Please people write a list of places in the uk more beautiful than that coz I'm not sure I believe you!

Stillwaitingforsummer · 14/08/2017 17:50

It wasn't the crowds that put me off tbh. It was just a bit meh! Not worth the journey - I could've been in France in the same time Grin

histinyhandsarefrozen · 14/08/2017 17:54

I find the food in France a bit boring though (this is heresy I know!) I've been to the dordogne a few times and prefer Cornwall.
I know, I know, I'm going to the wrong places!

retreatwhispering · 14/08/2017 17:55

I'm neutral about Cornwall. We go for several weeks a year to visit family but probably wouldn't bother otherwise.

There are some truly beautiful places but no more beautiful than many of the other places PPs have listed. Inland is often unimpressive but the coast can be spectacular. Other UK coastlines are just as lovely, of course.

It's SO far away from everywhere and very isolated - not always in a good way IMO. More racism and dismissive smugness directed at outsiders than I have encountered anywhere else in the country.

I'm glad that plenty of tourists go there, as Cornwall could do with the money.

lightgreenglass · 14/08/2017 17:55

I have the same thoughts about Cornwall - I went to North Devon beginning of June and loved it - already planning to go back next year.

My BF lives down there - I wouldn't go back if she didn't live there. Not going down in summer next year. Not worth it.

The Wheelhouse in Falmouth is delicious.

Shocked..really people don't love Cornwall?? You must be doing it wrong....travel down by train, hire a car at penzance station.days out in all sorts of places, and evenings on empty beaches..Hayle beach, porthminster and praa sands are our faves...god I'd live there if I could

Countdowntofour · 14/08/2017 18:39

I live in Cornwall - it's beautiful but I do love the lake district, I'd go there for a holiday

We've just come back from a week in Cornwall and we had an amazing time. The weather was a bit hit-and-miss but we had a couple of lovely days on the beach, went to Heligan, the Eden Project and the seal sanctuary, DS had a surf lesson, went bodyboarding and quad biking and we accidentally saw the Red Arrows - it was all fab! I'd go back tomorrow for another week if I could.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 14/08/2017 18:55

We used to go to Carbis Bay every year until the hotel owner bastardised the whole place and started charging £10 to park!

user1495915742 · 14/08/2017 18:58

Couldn't agree more. I love the beaches but that's about it.

Far prefer Wales or Nothumberland. Fewer people too!

IfNot · 14/08/2017 19:02

I have never found people in the West Country to be very friendly tbh. I prefer Wales . Love the Welsh!

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 14/08/2017 19:02

I grew up and live in Cornwall l, but lived away for 15 years. I learned in moving away that there are such things as multicultural cities, taxis after midnight, decent curries and a host of other life lessons.

It also illustrated to me a number of issues: how racist the Cornish are - not in the sense of your skin colour or nationality, but if you weren't born in Cornwall you are looked down on. How short sighted the councils are in refusing to move with the times - for example public transport is rubbish, single lane A roads to traverse the county, refusal of developments like the University campus in Penzance / Newlyn that was refused as was the marina, the loss of the heliport (now coming back), how run down towns are becoming with a fixation on building out of town shopping centres.....

As for the tourists not liking touristy resorts, I'm not surprised. Go off the beaten track. Get out of Looe, avoid Lands End like the plague, skip Padstow and pretend Newquay doesn't exist.

Go to the Rame Peninsula. The Lizard. The moors. Search off the main drags and enjoy what we love and live in. It's truly beautiful.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 14/08/2017 19:02

The north coast of Devon is lovely, Woolacombe, Croyde, Ilfracombe.... I think Cornwall is nice but agree getting there is a complete PITA.

Mind you getting anywhere in the U.K in August is pretty hideous, am now wondering if I need to plan a trip to South Wales at some point, any particular areas to visit or miss??

Violetcharlotte · 14/08/2017 19:14

I love Cornwall and have had some great holidays there. However we've been lucky with the weather, I'm sure it's not so great in the rain. There's plenty of other places in the UK that are equally nice though.

Therealslimshady1 · 14/08/2017 19:17

Been to Cornwall, did not like Newwuay (drunk students, and desperate families in flats) Looe or Fawey (too busy) but Polperro for example was charming, and there were some amazing beaches (empty!) and walks close by.

Seems 90/ of people go to the same places (Padstow! Walking around like you're in a pack of sardines, ludicrous) so just avoid the popular places, and then it can be really great.

I agree YANBU. I hate the high walls/hedges of Devon and Cornwall and struggled to find anywhere to walk the dog. The traffic and narrow one way, windy roads.

I had one holiday in Cornwall where I completely lost it with Cornwall - the twee, busy, fishiness of it all.

I had walked off in a strop about something or other and bloody stumbled onto a Doc Martin's film set they wre in the middle of a bloody take! I just stropped through like Victor Meldrew with a pushchair. Grin I am not entirely sure whether I made the cut but am ashamed of my behaviour now because I love Martin Clunes in Doc Martin and he must of thought I was nuts!Grin

Notknownatthisaddress · 14/08/2017 20:18

I totally agree OP. I also think the whole of the south west in over rated, and it takes AGES to get to from most of the UK! I mean hours and hours and hours!!!!!!!

A friend of mine went to Penzance in Cornwall, to a wedding in May, (she lives in Northampton.) It took SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS to get there and TEN to get back, because there were a couple of traffic accidents on the way back.. (It's about 325 miles from her.) She said it was not what she was expected and was flat and dull and she preferred the Cotswolds and Wales!

I am also not a fan of the south of England, and south east either. I do think the home counties are pretty OK, but again, not as nice as counties further North. I'd rather have Wales, the Lake District, The Peak District, Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Yorkshire. And Scotland (obvs!) And also the Cotswolds are pretty. Snowdonia is beautiful, and we go there at LEAST once a year.

Also, as I said earlier, Cornwall (and Devon) are both a MARE to get to, and just seem so far away from everywhere. And as has been said, over-rated.

YANBU OP! It's very odd that it's so revered. I wouldn't live there if you paid me.
