Trying to find the closest bit of seaside we can get to by train, I can get to Birmingham easily , but depending on connections will look at other options. Ideally we just want to go for a day before ds starts school.

Have you looked at north Wales? Prestatyn is about 2 hours from Birmingham and the train runs all the way along the coast at the top so you'd have your pick of beaches. Blackpool is also about 2 hours and so is Weston Super Mare. I think they all have one change.

You're pretty much equidistant between Weston super mare 2 hrs to Southwest and the Fylde coast 2hrs to North West, changing at Preston.Blackpool is cheap and cheerful, or tacky, depending on your view, but theres smaller coastal resorts to the south - Saint Anne's on sea and lytham which are on the train line are nice, good beaches, less developed.

Personally I'd go north as it's cheaper and less busy, but it can be quite blowy, Weston is more sheltered.

I know my son's caught the train from New St to Aberystwyth a couple of times in the last few years.

My childhood holiday were either Prestatyn or Blackpool ! mainy because of having to rely on trains, Blackpool certainly does have its own unique character about it though. Grin

Come to Borth - It seems like most of Birmingham comes here in the holidays :D
It's about two and a half hours by train.

farmerswifey2 Barmouth is another for Midlanders. I've only been there once and it was like Walsall By The Sea.
