Cornwall camping

Hi, We are looking to travel from the North of Scotland to Cornwall for a camping trip. I know nothing about Cornwall, which means we have no idea on which part of Cornwall we should stay. DCs are 11 and 14. We'd like them to be able to get some surf lessons, but apart from that, we'd like to be near a beach and a town. I'd be grateful for any recommendations or suggestions.

I live near Newquay! It's your typical 'tacky' holiday destination but it's a surfing hotspot with plenty of beaches and many places to surf! Is it bad I have lived here all my life and have never surfed? 🙈 There's a fair bit to do - a zoo, a boating lake, a cinema, an aquarium and other theme parks nearby. It has shops, many places to eat and arcades etc. It is a beautiful place BUT, it gets extremely busy and quite rowdy at night (ok if you're not hanging around the town too late).

If you're looking for something less 'busy' Polzeath is also a good surfing spot. Polzeath is a village and obviously a lot quieter than Newquay and the nearest town is Wadebridge - Padstow isn't too far away either. A bit more 'up-market' than Newquay but less to do! I come from Wadebridge and there isn't much to do there.

So I'd say Newquay if you want a lot do on your doorstep but the Polzeath area if you're looking for quieter. It still gets very busy in and around these places but not quite so rowdy as Newquay. Other places around Polzeath to stay include: Rock, Wadebridge, Daymer and Port Issac which is a little further away.

Thanks shootingstar - very helpful. I know what you mean about not surfing - I live very close to ski resorts and beautiful mountains but have never "munro bagged" or ski-ied :-)
