London restaurants

We're off to London next week - me, DH, GPs and DC. We're staying at County Hall and then off to theatre in Soho. Tower of London on Sunday.

Last time we went, we booked places to eat which cut down on traipsing round with hungry DC (and DH!).

Any recommendations of places? Probs in Soho for Saturday lunchtime. Between Soho and County Hall for Sat tea time. Brunch somewhere near County Hall. Hoping to find an M&S near the Tower for picnic lunch.

We like modern, Mediterranean/Thai/Mexican etc. Luckily the DC are not too fussy, but me and the GPs don't want anywhere too noisy (i.e. Soho Wahaca would finish us off!).

Tesco Express, EAT, Pret, Paul's, and loads of others near the Tower but there is a fish and chip stand there that sells the best chips - their fish looks rank but I love their chips. Ted's Fish and Chips - yummy crispy steaming hot chips on a cold day are the best.

Will think about the others.

Try the French House in Soho, for a slice if history with your lunch. Or pop over to China Town for Dim Sum

Le Bab for Saturday lunch? Book ahead. Modern gourmet kebabs not too noisy. Great fresh food, can be basic for children.

Have booked the restaurant just outside the Tower for Sunday lunch.
Seem to be struggling to find places for breakfast on Sunday around County Hall. Was planning to stay that side of the river for the ferry, but would it be better to go across the River to Covent Garden?

Near County Hall (just the other side of Waterloo station) is a street called Lower Marsh which ahs loads of restaurants, some of them very good. It's a while since ai've been there so can't recommend one in particular, nor am I sure which are open at breakfast time, but that's where I'd go to look.

Best place for Covent Garden/Soho for dinner? Expectations are quite high . The city we live in has a brilliant restaurant scene at the moment so we're expecting big things of London.

All the 'wow' places will probably be booked now. I like to go down to Seven Dials on a night, It's quite buzzy but not quite as hectic as Soho or Covent Garden. St. Katherine's Pier is right next to the Tower of London was pretty quiet when I popped down there for breakfast on Sunday.

Nothing at The Ivy or J Sheekey even at 5pm (Le Caprice does have tables)

Boo that's a shame. I'd book a table for Le Caprice while there is still some left then cancel if you find something else. To be honest The Pier has quite a few chains, but I've never had a bad meal at Côte, there is one on St. Martins Lane I think. Could you bear to queue for Barrafina?

Go over to Belgravis and try one of the Olivo restaurants

Actually what about Bob Bob Ricard? Clos Maggiore is wonderful but doubt you will get a table this late in the game? Anything left for The Sky Garden?

breakfast at the National Gallery is just lovely...refined but relaxed...mainly cos there's never any other bugger in there.

also Centrepoint used to do a lovely feast at breakfast time, but haven't been there for aaaaaaaaages

lots of place on the river between Borough and Southbank...dawdle past Southwark Cathedral, and past Golden Hinde

I like London Orient in chinatown, used to be The Jade Garden...just up Wardour street, on the left, a spit from the chinatown gate and with the dreaded M&M store behind you on the right

otherwise, we tend to dawdle on streets behind the main streets....Kingly Street/Heddon Street/Beak Street...read all the menus and see what takes our fancy.
used to be some nice places on Floral Street ...sort of links Covent Garden with back of Leicester Square/soho ish

it's mostly just dh and me, or me and AN Other though so it's way easier to just bounce in for a table for two and wing it.

Would love to try Barrafina - are the queues awful even at 5.30pm?

and, NOT to be missed,
SAID for the best hot chocolate

Comptoir in soho is Lebanese and has a lovely atmosphere, there's also some lovely Korean places. Ping pong is a chain but nice dim sum and easier than trying to pick one of the many restaurants in china town.

Have seen Comptoir's around. Not coming out with great google reviews tho (I know that's not always fair picture)

Saw FlatIron - DH and DC would love it but I don't eat meat
