Cheap Days Out: recommendations please!

Hi all

We are looking to update our Cheap Days Out info and we'd love Mumsnetters to contribute to it.

We want to hear about beautiful parks and open spaces, lovely beaches, cheap (or free!) tourist attractions and family friendly museums near you.

Please do post your recommendations on the thread, we're really looking forward to hearing what you've got to say.

Fort Nelson, Porchester, Hants. So much to see and learn about here. Unbelievable that it's free. My children, aged 4 and 7 loved exploring the spooky tunnels. It has quite a nice cafe too.

Not free but we joined National Trust this year and for a family of 4 it works out at £9.25 a month and we have à huge selection of places to go. Many are child orientated and have fab play areas and special activities and loads of land to run wild. Wish I'd joined years ago!

Southampton Art Gallery, picnic in the park opposite, walk around the Medieval walls. All free.

Margam Park, near Port Talbot South Wales. 30mins from Cardiff or Swansea, extensive beautiful grounds, big castle to explore, two brilliant playparks, small farm trail, train ride in season, heard of deer, woodland trail, long or short walks or bike rides, go ape high ropes, and lots of events on through the year.

Entry £4.90 per car (train and go ape extra I think). Great day out.

Don't laugh but Cheshire Polo club is a great day out.

£10 per car for all day and you can take a picnic!

Fort Nelson is great. We went the other week. DC's 9 & 8.

You can also go to the Royal Opera house for peanuts if you sign up for a family Welcome Performance and remember to book ahead. We saw R&J for a fiver each. They put on a morning of activities and the ballet (or opera ) is in the afternoon.

Cutteslowe Park in Oxford. Fantastic for anyone under 7. Big playground, aviary, mini golf, miniature steam train running on Wednesdays (check first), lots of space to play. There's quite a lot of parking but it is pay and display (not expensive though). The train costs something like £1 a ride, the golf is about the same cost. It's always slightly windier than you think.

A variety of small exhibitions and frequent activities - check and see what's on, all free, opposite Euston station.
It's not one of the Big Museums, but an hour or two's interest for science / arts curious people.
