Exeter for a solo break?

Is Exeter a worthwhile destination for a few days' break? Will be travelling by train so no car but happy to get buses out and about. If so can anyone recommend a good (4 or 5 star) hotel which isn't too corporate - preferably with spa facilities?

I think that Bath would be much nicer & far more to do without a car.

Posted too soon - far more choice of spa hotels in Bath as well.

Agree with magimedi - I live near Exeter and absolutely love it. However, for a relaxing solo break I choose Bath every time.

Thanks. I've been to Bath and Bristol recently. I'll have a rethink. An alternative could be New York...... Grin

I stayed at Exeter Mecure hotel for a 2 night break last year (DD & I). Lovely hotel, pool, sauna, gym, does a Fab breakfast loads of choice for £10. I got a deal on laterooms. They have a great theatre there, nice walks along the river bank, museum there, nice shops... We found loads to do including boating on river...

Exeternal underground tour, cathedral and Castle are lovely.
The riverside area is lovely too.

Trains and busses to other places are very frequently. ...Coast or other towns.
