Holiday Tension Between Me and DH

So for a few years now DH has been refusing to go anywhere UKs based that isn't Center Parcs. He says he wants a holiday that will be guaranteed hot and sunny. I don't fly.....and won't be in the future. I'm plane phobic so that's a no-go.

DH says I'm selfish by not flying and limiting our family summer holidays to the Uk. We have been to France but I'm not good in the heat....really not good. I can't be in the sun and neither can DD. Anything higher than about 22 and I'm done for.

I don't see why we can't book a cottage/farmhouse/hotel in the Uk....somewhere where is lots to do. There are so many places we haven't been and lots of places we have that would be great for a holiday.

I thought Cornwall, Tenby, Cumbria, Scotland etc.....but he refuses. He says it will rain and then what will do.

As a child, we spent pretty much all of our holidays in Scotland so I'm very used to waking in the pouring rain and just get on with it. He says that's no holiday though. We are reluctant to go to France due to the increasing safety worry at the Tunnel. We were planning on going to Disney Paris in July but after last week with the gunman, we thinking not. We could go to France but don't really want to take a long ferry as DH and kids get sea sick badly.

Any ideas.....and places it's highly unlikely to rain. We live in East Anglia so somewhere not near here would be good.

You really can't beat the UK in summer when the weather is nice but when it rains and is cold it's awful. Cornwall and devon are both lovely. As is Pembrokeshire. If you like center Parcs have a look at bluestone as if the weather is good it's really easy to get out to Tenby/Saundersfoot.

As a kid I holidayed in this country and have fabulous memories. But the weather was always fantastic. In recent years when we've been with the kids it has been wet and cold and although I love a good hike up a mountain it's not much fun and hardly quality time. I resented paying money for things like swimming, soft play, aquariums etc to keep them entertained when all we wanted to do was build sand castles. We've now given up on the uk in the summer and go abroad. If you go abroad at Easter/may/October it won't be so hot.

I get travel sickness too. Have your family tried sea bands or medication?

I won't drive on motorways and I know exactly where I've got the fear...all learnt from my DM who was exactly the same. Be very careful.
MIL won't fly and it's terribly sad. PIL have plenty of money and could go anywhere, but end up in Paignton or Wales every year, and I mean every year. It's caused a lot of resentment between them.

I do sympathise about the flying. TBH I don't think children are terribly deprived if they don't get to do lots of foreign travel at a young age, it can be absolutely amazing to do all that in your late teens/young adulthood. i did fly twice as a child which was a lot for those days but then we got a lot broker and had interesting uk holidays which I loved and then we got really skint and had none, which was also OK tbh.

I'm really glad you're going to get out there and head off to France - hope your dh is happy with that and that you all enjoy yourselves.

Thanks annandale .
I'm really glad I wrote this thread because I've now got over myself and we're going to book Disney this weekend and go via the tunnel Smile.
Think it will be campsite in south of France next year.....and perhaps Scotland the year after!

I think you have had a hard time on her verb! We holiday all over the world and this year we are staying in the UK because I would feel happier- booked a caravan in st Ives and a cottage in staithes north Yorkshire.
Glad your sorted.

To be honest, DH thinks he is at Le Mans whenever we exit or enter the toll stations

LOL - I think we are married to the same man Grin Grin

I had hypnotherapy after we bought a house in Florida and I suddenly developed a fear of flying.

I'm fine now. I did Florida 3-4 times a year and now do Europe 3 times a year.

No problems at all.

You could also learn EFT which is great for phobias.

Thankfully I have no travel sickness issues and love the sunshine.26-28 is my ideal temp.

Good for you for getting that holiday booked. South of France is Amazing. Love that red rock road. Try to get to Grasse.

I went to the South of France by train last year and it was brilliant. Eurostar to Paris and then TGV to St Raphael. Lovely town, not too chichi Côte d'Azur. I loved the train journey too. Eurostar do a direct train to Marseilles too.
