Making stuff!

Hello :-)
I'm new here! I don't have any children yet, but I'm very into education (I'm thinking I might take a PGCE in a couple of years). I'm trying to freelance as an illustrator at the moment- I had a part time job, but I lost it around Christmas, and so, decided to go into business with my mum (who's a former school teacher, and now teaches the piano), we set up this blog in the hope that, if we get enough traffic, we might be able to monetise it.

I'm also hoping to start a social enterprise up, giving workshops to disadvantaged parents, on how to get more actively making stuff with their children- which is very important, but I feel that some parents may not have the resources/ creativity to do.

And so, what I was hoping that you lovely mums (and dads!) might be able to do is take a look at our blog, which is still in its infancy, give us some feedback, and, if you have time, get making! It would be really awesome if you could tweet me your child's creations @artyfactsUK

Do you have any qualifications/experience of working with "disadvantaged parents"? Not to discourage you but the sector is littered with well-meaning but clueless do-gooders. I'm sure you aren't one but you didn't mention your professional background in your OP.

I have a degree in illustration- my mother has a PGCE, and is experienced in setting up workshops. She already has several plans that she's previously used for workshops, which she's giving me. I don't yet have any experience, but she does.

I'm currently compiling research and plans, and I have a meeting with the Cultural Enterprise office about it in a couple of weeks.

I've no doubt that you could run a great craft workshop. It was the specific "disadvantaged parents" bit I was asking about. Who do you classify as disadvantaged? Just people who are a bit skint? Or people dealing with complex and persistent problems such as MH, disability, substance abuse, DV alongside their poverty?

By disadvantaged I just mean poor/ not many resources. I certainly don't mean people with disabilities- I've done a bit of volunteering in the past with disabled kids, and I KNOW that's way out of my depths!
