Edinburgh: Easter Weekend

To my Great Shame I have never been to Scotland. That is to change as we are flying up for the Easter weekend and staying in the city centre. Very excited!

It seems to be the only weekend that there's nothing on at the theatre, so I'm looking for ideas for the evenings for me, DH and DS8.

Whilst we're about it do you have any "must dos" for the daytime, and as we are all a bit fond of a fancy restaurant any tips.

Are you history buffs or art buffs or shopping fiends?

Big city with lots of options to suit different people

DS might enjoy My Dynamic Earth or the museum?
Have you checked all the theatres - Playhouse and Kings?
Camera Obscura on the Royal Mile is huge fun. Ds will love it.

Sunny we are open to everything except horse riding

*Demented" I thi it was the Playhouse site I was on, where it seems the only weekend of the year when nothing at all is on is the weekend we visit. Will try Kings.

There's the national museum of Scotland which might be of interest and it's a free

If you're lucky with the weather holyrood park/Arthur seat is nice to walk around/up and you get some cracking views of Edinburgh and you're also close to holyrood palace and Edinburgh castle.

Also Festival theatre might have something on.
Harvey Nics has lovely restaurant.
If going to Camera Obscura, The Castle is then just 2 mins away for. Wander round.
The Zoo is good and have new big dinosaur display that my son (6) loves.
Portobello Beach is good for a wonder along the Prom.
Arthur Seat is good for rolling eggs down !!
Ocean Terminal good for shopping, cinema and has The Royal Yacht Britannia.
Edinburgh Dungeons are good.
Princess Street Gardens.
The Witchery nice for food. Lots of nice restaurants in George Street, The Dome.
Massive trampoline Park Rize in Midlothoan.

Stockbridge is a ice place to wander in and out of pubs, cafes and independent shops. It also has the Botanics which is lovely.

For DS tho the museum is having a lego special at the end of Jan that is free. Its also within walking distance of the cafe where JK Rowling wrote Harry potter. There are lots of fun closes and shops on the Mile and the castle is great for big and small kids

This is all great. I had spotted Witchery on a top restaurant guide, so that's on the list too. Like the egg rolling. DH is talking about hiring a car on Sunday.

I am so excited! I picked this over a trip to NY! I'm so pleased that there's loads to look forward to.

Has anyone been to Tom Kitchens restaurant? Shall we spoil ourselves? I loves him on Masterchef

The zoo is on the list for the pandas! Love the Lego and dinosaur stuff. DS may not want to come back at this rate!

Note that you need to book to see the Pandas in advance to be guaranteed a slot, but you can do it all online.

I'd do the Museum of Scotland on Chambers St over Dynamic Earth. (I think Dynamic Earth is a bit pants to be honest)

Good hills for egg rolling in Princes St Gardens, city centre.

Stockbridge/Botanics is a good shout for Sunday morning. Isn't there a really good newish gastropub pub towards the Comely Bank end of Stockbridge owned by a reasonably famous chef?

Found it! It's a Tom Kitchin gastropub - the Scran and Scallie.

Yes, Scran and Scallie. Very nice (not cheap, but cheaper than the Kitchin!) and you'll have to book. It's a joint venture between Tom Kitchin and ...someone else!

The Kitchin is lovely, and reasonable(ish) for lunch. You'll need to book soon though (I think it might be closed in Jan).

If you fancy a dash over to Glasgow the Science Centre is fantastic. Camera Obscura is a must. The vault tours are good, but depends on your DC as some of them go a bit OTT on the supernatural. Walk up Arthur's Seat for amazing views.
It's an amazing city,none of my our favourites. Have a lovely trip.
