Shops are OK, night life is OK - lots of good bars and cheesy nightclubs. B bar is good/trendy which is by borders Make sure you go punting.

Ark is full of intersting things which is by Great St. Marys.

Avoid the Grafton Centre. Some nice shops off the beaten track.

Many restaurants and bars are down Regent St - but avoid The Regal the giant Wetherspoons full of underage drinkers. Loads of places to eat. the best idea is to look at Local Secrets and read the reviews. I like the Varsity Restaurant and would love to go to De Luca's (both in Regent St).
Shopping is difficult at present as the centre is being dug up for two new shopping malls and John Lewis is temporarily in the awful Grafton Centre area (10 mins walk from historic centre). Try Green St and Trinity St for more interesting shops.
I would also recommend Cazimir for coffees/lunch (King St) or Cotto (East Rd near Grafton).
DS1 knows all about the night life (he is a wannabee DJ) but is away at university. There are several bars with late opening down Regent St but he says that most of the clubs are dire and play cheese.
