Ludlow

Hi
We will be in Ludlow with our DC - 7 and 10 for a long weekend.
I googled earlier this year and found a site which ran steam trains near Ludlow but cannot seem to find it now. Did I imagine it?!

Also looking for suggestions for things to do and places to eat.

Thanks,

You are thinking of The Severn Valley Railway

It's brilliant, and so is Ludlow. There are so many cheese shops and delis in Ludlow that you will be lost for choice if you are a foodie.

Ludlow castle is unmissable, and just wandering around the town soaking up the atmosphere passes the time nicely.

A steam service often runs on the Heart of Wales line, one stop north of Ludlow from Craven Arms. Occasional steam services also pass through the town itself and stop at the station. However, if you want guaranteed steam action then the Severn Valley is the largest of the steam railways in the area with a fixed timetable. Bewdley is the stop nearest to Ludlow.

There are some lovely small steam railways just over the border in wales - the Welshpool and Llanfair light railway being a rather sweet example.

Fresh food is fantastic in Ludlow, but don't fall for too much foodie gumph. It is all about the produce - the restaurants (with the exception of a couple of outstanding ones) are liable to disappoint. Check out the butchers (all three independents), the market, cheese monger, fish monger, green grocers for a real treat. For anyone who lives in a decent size city the delis are a bit 'meh' tbh.

Thanks for the replies.
Glad to hear there is a steam train. My DS will be delighted and I am glad to hear about the good food!!
Now just fingers crossed for dry weather when we go.
