Tell me about Whitby?

thinking of going for Oct half term for a few days me, hub and ds age 10.

Where to go, places to stay would be helpful thank you

Nice. Cold. Busy. If, as your name suggests you're a fan of the southwest you will be disappointed with the sea. It's brown.

When is Autumn half term exactly?

Whitby is strongly associated with Dracula (in the original Bram Stoker novel, Whitby is where Dracula first landed in England), so if you're clashing with Halloween, it could be very busy with Goths and Dracula fans.

It is nice. One side is traditional touristy naff the other is more tasteful and classy.

Robin Hoods bay is nearby which is a bit like Clovelly.

York is in driving distance and is fab!

As a West Country girl though I always struggle to get past the colour of the sea.

Whitby is lovely but basically perched on a cliff and could be freezing in October half term. I would pick somewhere less exposed. We have had decent weather/nice holidays in Dartmouth, Torquay, the Cotswolds and the forest of Dean at that time of year. Whitby in the summer can be gorgeous though - lovely coast and countryside around there. Lots to do and close enough to get to York.

You could camp in Dalby Forest or hire a lodge. I think they have wood burners and hot tubs. Whitby is then close enough for a few day trips but you also have the forest activities and more shelter if needed

I've been twice, once in October we stayed in a cottage in the town, and once at easter we stayed in a caravan nearby (it had heating! ).

It was cold, but dry and sunny so we didn't mind.

There's lots to do: we went on the beach, there was a small fair, arcades, fish and chips, the abbey, a dracula tour at night around whitby, a trip on the steam railway, loads of lovely shops and cafes, boat trip around the habour, we went over to Robin Hoods Bay, visited the town where heartbeat was filmed

Was there for oct 31 last year and it coincided with goth weekend.

It was fabulous and really warm. The costumes were amazing. Don't let the time of year put you off. You're not far from Scarborough, York etc and you'll love the atmosphere.

We went in Oct half term last year and were really lucky with the weather, it was lovely and warm.

Dalby Forrest is well worth a visit as is Robin Hoods Bay

The youth hostel in Whitby is fab - right next to the Abbey (although it's bloody pricey now) We stayed in a cottage at Easter with a company called Ingrid Flute cottages who have a good selection. Love Robin Hoods Bay and Runswick Bay too and there's a great beach at Sandsend.

It's lovely, bit busy. I'd not go in October - doubt you'd get accomodation tbh.

Lovely little villages nearby - Robin Hoods Bay, and Staithes is gorgeous - where they film 'old jacks boat'. Also worth a look is 'Falling Foss' tea garden here

We went in May too. It's lovely! We stayed at robin hoods bay, there is a MASSIVE hill! But it's lovely!

The pie and mash shop is a must!

Sandsend Staithes Robin Hoods Bay-avoid Scarborough bit tacky TBH

Falling foss is lovely

Museum in Pannet Park is great the park itself is very pretty

Lots of good places to eat check out Rusty Shears

Whitby is the kind of place you can just wander and people watch.

Lots of vintage shops.

One of my favourite places - last time we stayed at Campion - Whitby holiday cottages but have also used Ingrid Flute cottages.

It is impossible to park in Whitby during the summer. Last time we went we got the train and I am convinced some families just gave up and drove out of town, unable to park. We've been three times and I'm afraid the last time it was packed full, everyone was wandering around very slowly eating and it was all a bit much so we vowed never again. It might be much better in half term. We have had massive success with the beaches of Bridlington and trips to places like Eden Camp (a whole day out, kids fascinated by WW2 internment camp) and Bempton to see puffins plus Scarborough (ice cream parlour to die for, seaworld place etc) also had fun in Hull at Ferens Gallery and mega aquarium The Deep. This will be our 5th time in and around Bridlington. We drive up there and then use the train as much as we can.
