Night away 'up North?

Me and DP thinking of maybe getting away for a night sometime next month. We are going through a tough time at the minute and being away from home for more than a night isn't really an option because of this. We live in the Preston area and were thinking York? Willing to spend £100-150 on a nice hotel and seen a nice one in York for £85 with really good reviews. Is there a lot to do in York? Otherwise what about Leeds, Harrogate? Had thought about Manchester/Liverpool and found some nice hotels but I go on shopping trips to both at least 3-4 times a year so it doesn't seem so 'special'. Even though I lived up here all my life I have never really been to other cities in the North, always go down south or abroad .

I love York and Leeds,

plenty to do in both and if you can get a Hotel overlooking the racecourse in York the views are lovely. that would put you at about a 15 minute walk to the train station.

York has a big designer outlet for shopping and lots of bars and restaurants. Leeds is quite similar, the trinity centre has some beautiful restaurants. both are quite studenty. York a bit more spread out than leeds.

Thanks I think we will go for York then . Hotel I am looking at is in Clifton which Google says is about a 20 minute walk from the dungeons (just picked a random touristy place I saw on the map) which neither of us mind. Do you know if there are any good places for breakfast in the city? Not sure whether to book breakfast with the hotel or not

York is full of quirky little places, books and crannies and oddities. It's much older and full of historical stuff - city walks, castle etc. Leeds is a more mainstream commercial big city.

There are plenty of cafes and the likes of the slug and lettuce and lloyds bars too which all serve breakfast.

Yeah I think will leave breakfast and just find something whilst there. I'm getting quite excited now! I know it's only a night but me and DP just need a break away from what's going on at home no matter how small or close

We recently baby sat three of my grandsons so my son and partner could have an overnighter in York.

They had an amazing time and packed loads in. Check out hotels in Bootham that's a bit nearer than Clifton to walk in, but if you like your chosen one go for it.

Personally I wouldn't spend toomuch on your hotel as you'll want to be out and about ASAP I would have thought.

Our two were away after dropping the kids at school . They did the dungeons, a lot of drinking, a boat trip. You must go to Cosmo . It's an all u can eat buffet but very, very nice.

Remember that the minister is free when there is a service on, so go around five ish for evensong or something. Best to check beforehand.

Don't forget the railway museum is free and excellent. The castle museum is very good as is the museum gardens.

Are you sure you can't manage two days.

Lots of street entertainment, markets and a lovely little cinema down by the river if you want to catch a movie

Only three screens but we love it. Also have a nice snack while overlooking the river

Agree. York 100 times nicer than Leeds for a weekend away. Agree that Bootham has some lovely quirky hotels. Agree to just exploring. The Minster is beautiful, the Shambles. Enjoy! slightly biased as met my husband there

No really can't do 2 nights I'm afraid . Chose the hotel in Clifton because it isn't too expensive and will only have to walk between the hotel and city twice because we are going by train and will just carry out bags round all day so will only have to walk to the hotel one night and back into the city the next morning .

There is far more to see and do than can be fitted in during a one day visit. It is a wonderful place.

Agree so much nicer athan Leeds.
You'll have a lovely time and want to come back again and again.
