Romantic weekend away

It's our fifth wedding anniversary at the end of May (not bank holiday weekend) and MIL is going to stay and watch the DC.

We live in London. We can leave Friday evening, about 5pm, and will have to be back Sunday, late afternoon. Not too far due to late start on Friday, and wanting to have at least part of Sunday. We don't have a car, so near a train would be great, although we could consider hiring a car for the weekend.

Budget is about £200 per night ideally, but could stretch it for somewhere really good.

Any suggestions for a lovely place? Thanks!

What do you like to do? Do you want to stay in a city, or somewhere smaller in the country?

I don't really mind if it's a city or the country!

DH is not very outdoorsy, so probably wouldn't like somewhere that is just long walks/hikes, but would be happy with a comfortable walk, especially if there is a nice pub at the end of it.

Perhaps a country place that's not too far from a small city?

York is 2 hours from Kings Cross and it's lovely

Yeah! York is fab . was there on Saturday ;-)

Thanks, I hadn't thought of York for some reason - it is lovely and I haven't been in years, and never with DH.

Is anywhere there particularly nice to stay/eat/drink?

Ive always stayed at the Deangate Hotel overlooking the Minster, it's lovely, great breakfast too and very good location.
