we are hoping to visit Stonehenge during the summer holidays and was wondering if anyone knew of any reasonable priced hotels/B&Bs/campsites close by, open to suggestions ,cheaper the better :-)

Afraid I don't, but these links have some 'where to stay' items I think:

Sorry - the National Trust link doesn't work, but you can probably search manually.

All Saints Cottage

This place is in the Pewsey Vale, between Stonehenge and Avebury. Avebury's stone circle pre-dates Stonehenge.

I haven't checked the prices recently.

There is a travelodge just down the road at Countess Services. What else are you planning on doing whilst in the area? Stonehenge won't take long. Salisbury is a lovely town with hotels, b and bs, a youth hostel or a couple of miles out a premier inn.

Holiday inn at solstice park too.

More choice in Salisbury though, and there is also a C&CC site, and a couple of campsites on the outskirts. Stonehenge won't take that long to visit so maybe best to combine the visit with something else.

I love a thread like this when it's an area I know.
I would probably spend one day visiting Stonehenge, Old Sarum (Harvester opposite there is a good cheap and cheerful place to eat) then spend the afternoon visiting Salisbury. Saturday is market day which is fun for a wander, the cathedral is impressive and Queen Elizabeth Gardens is good for a picnic with a nice park and a river you can paddle in. The Woodford valley also has a couple of nice pubs with beer gardens - the Bridge and the Wheatsheaf. Heale house gardens also do good cake and Wilton house has a great adventure playground.

The other day I'd probably head in the other direction and visit Avebury and maybe have a wander by the Kennet and Avon canal or visit Marlborough. Enjoy!

Avebury is so much better than Stonehenge. You can get right up to the stones & you are not close by a main road.

Silbury Hill, v close to Avebury is also v impressive.
