I can't make my mind up where to stay ... I will be having a few days away on my own, no car. I like lovely scenery and interesting gift shops. I definitely want to visit Osborne House. My first thought was to stay in Cowes but the transport links to the rest of the island don't seem to be so good from here. Equally, I don't want too many transport changes on my in/out journey with my suitcase in tow! I quite like the look of Ventnor but that would mean the train across the island and then a bus after that .. is it worth the extra hassle. Is Shanklin really family orientated? (which obviously I don't need). Any tips on what any of the towns are like would be really, really helpful.

The island isn't that big.Wherever you stay will be near somewhere you want to go to. The bus service is pretty good, but a bit expensive. Have a good break, we liked it so much we moved here.

I always stay in Cowes. I think it offers great shops and restaurants. The transport links are not too bad you just need to get a bus to Newport and a bus out from there to anywhere else.
You can take the chain ferry from Cowes to East Cowes and either walk to Osborne House or catch a bus.
I love Ventnor too but you are limited with transport and eating out. The beach is lovely though.
If you stay in Cowes you can walk to Gurnard, there's a lovely cafe by the beach.
