Birmingham Restaurant Recommendations

DH and I have a child free evening in Birmingham this Saturday and would like to go out for dinner somewhere nice before we go to the New Alexandra Theatre for the evening. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice? We are not familiar with Birmingham at all so have no idea and I'm sure there will be plenty of options. TIA.

Google the mailbox. It's over the road and has a few restaurants in there.

peggysue82 · 02/04/2015 20:56

Ok thanks JerryFudd. That's useful to know. I've had a look online and it seems quite nice but very similar chains to what we have in Bristol (Nandos, Cafe Rouge, Pizza Express etc.) Was kinda hoping we might find something a bit 'different'...DH is a bit of a foody and would rather eat somewhere that isn't a huge chain. He is difficult to please Wink

Turtle Bay is good if you like Carribean food. You'll need to book though.

LadyBarlow · 02/04/2015 20:59

Turtle bay is ace- but you need to book. It's Caribbean food & cocktails & is 2 mins walk from the Alex theatre.

LadyBarlow · 02/04/2015 21:01

Great minds! small bear

thesmallbear · 02/04/2015 21:01

*Caribbean

Purnells is lovely-restaurant or bistro. Owner often on Saturday kitchen!

Leviticus · 02/04/2015 21:03

San Carlo is a lovely Italian.

LadyBarlow · 02/04/2015 21:03

I agree Purnells is lovely but I think you'd struggle to get a reservation for this Saturday

LadyBarlow · 02/04/2015 21:05

Ooh! Fumo - which is Italian tapas & owned by San Carlo is fab as well. They don't take reservations so you just go & wait, Im guessing if you're going to the theatre, you'd need to eat early, so should be fine there.

jemma2609 · 02/04/2015 21:05

Good point Lady. San Carlo is good. Fumo is too as is Opus.

thesmallbear · 02/04/2015 21:06

Purnells is a fair walk from the theatre as well.

Morebounceperounce · 02/04/2015 21:07

Went to Purnell's Bistro last night and had an incredible value prix fixe that was absolutely lovely.

peggysue82 · 02/04/2015 21:27

Ohh yes those all look lovely! Great suggestions. DH would absolutely LOVE to go to Purnells...I'm guessing we would be unlikely to get in at such short notice tho. Hmm How far is Fuma from the theatre? Would it be walkable? We are staying in the Copthorne Hotel so would be good if we could walk between the three. Possible? X

Lasan is lovely :) you might struggle for thus Saturday though, not sure how quickly it books up.

peggysue82 · 02/04/2015 21:39

Just been looking at Lasan and it does look delicious. I remember them being on the Gordon Ramsey programme too. Unfortunately looking at their website I don't think we would have time to eat there and get to the theatre as they don't open until 6pm for dinner service. Will defo keep them in mind for if we return tho. X

Copthorne is short walk along broad street from Brindley place. In there there is Edmunds (french fine dining), Cielo (nice Italian) and Bank. There's also a nice fish restaurant above cafe Rouge (le monde)

jerryfudd · 02/04/2015 21:45

My dh says the fish place is a hidden gem that has an open presentation bar where the fish is on ice and available for you to pick your own

peggysue82 · 02/04/2015 22:02

Ooh fish is always a hit with my DH. Lots of great ideas here...thanks everyone. Grin

If you don't mind getting a taxi (not far, but definitely too far to walk) have a look at Simpsons in Edgbaston.

Chchchchanging · 02/04/2015 22:05

Fleet Street kitchen
Bank

thesmallbear · 03/04/2015 10:28

Bistro 1847 in the Great Western Arcade is also great. It's vegetarian, but really creative with it.

peggysue82 · 06/04/2015 08:22

Just wanted to say a massive thank-you for the recommendations. We went to Fumo and had the most amazing meal. Really was delicious. ?? xxx
