Mountain holiday august

Can someone recommend a holiday in the mountains with a small budget? Ideally we would like a ready tent/ yurt or caravan as we get stressed putting our own up lol. Our accommodation budget is £500 so quite small.

The best - and most numerous - mountains are in the Lake District. There are a lot of 'camping barns', camp-sites, and I guess caravan parks (though don't know for sure).

The 'touristy' areas - Windermere, Langdale, Grasmere - will be very busy.

The best, and quietest area is the North West corner, Keswick being the major town. But not far from there are Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater.

We stayed several times at a cottage at Rannerdale Farm, on the shore of Crummock water. The farm hire rowing boats, and the views from the middle of the lake, totally surrounded by Fells, is paradise!

There used to be a 'camping barn' at Buttermere.

If you want BIGGER mountains, Scotland is better. Snowdonia and all of North Wales is also super.

We went tignes one summer. The sport tignes card is excellent lots of free activities. Lake is freezing though. And you have the cost of getting there. But still might be worth a look

In looking for somewhere pretty with walks suitable for young children. And a campsite with a playground or similar suitable for the children to make friends. We went to the Lake District last year in a campsite but would rather be in a ready tent this year or caravan. We'd love a cottage or similar but I don't think we could afford it.

I haven't looked at the individual entries yet, but will do so sometime and comment if relevant.

As I said, the North West corner is quieter than the main tourist areas. Derwent water, near Keswick, is where Squirrel Nutkin went on the lake, and the Newlands Valley is the setting for 'Little Town' where Mrs Tiggy-Winkle lived, if the children are familiar with Beatrix Potter.

They are 6,4 and 1. Thanks for looking for me! Have you any experience of Wales too? We coming from the south so though they might be nearer.

When you say "mountains" would rather nice hills do, given the age of your children? I was thinking Peak District

For the Peak District, how about something like this - right by the Tissington Trail with good walks/cycle rides for children.

Thanks lilymaid that's looks great. My husband is the one who "needs" mountains. He'll usually go off for a day for a good walk whilst I do something with the children. The rest of the time we just enjoy the scenery and do gentle walks.

Wales is super too, It's just the Lake District has so MANY fells in a comparatively small area. But given the ages of the children, our DS at that age just liked a little stream to dam up, sail his boat, or paddle in when it was warm enough.

We used to go to Bala, with its famous lake. There is miniature lake-side railway now, between Bala and Llanuwchllyn village, at the foot of the Aran mountain.

Slovenia - mountains and lakes. Germans and Austrians holiday there in large numbers so its all set up for camping hols. The spas are good to visit with little children. Maybe you could stay at one of spa resorts e.g. www.terme-catez.si/en/online-booking/
Cheap flights to Ljubljana or Maribor or drive - approx 18 hours.
