Where / what was your best uk family holiday?

I am getting myself SO confused about where to go!

What was your best uk holiday as a family?

There are 7 of us (aged 3-70) and I think what we are after is a traditional seaside break with lots to do. Can we pinch your holiday ideas please? Grin

Either Lake District or Teignmouth. But I love the Lakes with a passion.

MonkeyPuzzler · 24/01/2015 19:05

I enjoy taking my DC to North and West Wales, especially Anglesey. As a child I loved our holidays in Cornwall.

FishyNibble · 24/01/2015 19:06

Isle of Man - we go every year for our main summer holiday, and the DC just love the beaches & general "old fashionedness" of the place. Plus the ferry journey is always fun (unless you're on the Vomit Comet in a Force 6-7...)

Purplehonesty · 24/01/2015 19:13

My best summer family holidays were in Penzance and another in Kircudbright at a caraban site right on the beach.
Recently I took my two dc to seahouses near Bamburgh and that was lovely too.
Also been to primrose valley on the Yorkshire coast near Filey and that was good too.

Swanage is nice we have been down there a few times

Blueberrymuffint0p · 24/01/2015 19:18

We holidayed in Cornwall last year and had an absolute blast, going again in august. We stayed in a cottage not far from st.ives. So muchto do:

Countless beaches
Lands end
Eden project
Seal sanctuary
Boat trip
Minack theatre (open air carved into cliffs over looking the sea, absolutely breathe taking and we saw a hilarious children's show)
St michaels mount (we saw fireworks from the harbour, squished up under a blanket)

We broke the journey up by staying over night at lyme Regis. We did the jurassic coast guided tour and found tonnes of fossils. Fantastic fun.

Then there's the cream teas, the pasties, ice creams.

Another vote for Woolacombe. Wonderful place.

paxtecum · 24/01/2015 19:24

Snowdonia, Anglesey, Barmouth, Aberdovey.
Loads of castles: Caernarfon, Conway, Criccieth, Harlech,Beaumaris.
Narrow gauge railways, slate mines, Centre for Alternative Energy at Machynlleth.
Beautiful beaches, beautiful mountains.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 24/01/2015 19:27

Swanage been to most places mentioned above and think swange area or cornwall, but all down that way will be a winner.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 24/01/2015 19:30

Would recommend Cornwall - Land's End is great for lunch/afternoon, and Eden Project for a day. Some Beautiful beaches and towns too.

We've stayed in lovely cottage in Penzance, camped in Marazion (St Michael's Mount is great) and one time in a lovely lodge in Portreath.

We've toyed with Newquay, but never actually been- thought it might be a bit raucous in summer Grin

Norfolk is great too - we stayed in the most beautiful place - Castle Acre, which is a short drive from Well's beach and is lovely. Boat trips to see seals and so on. We've always wanted to do a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads as well (may be next year - and maybe not with a 3yr old!)

Trickydecision · 24/01/2015 20:24

Magical holiday in a cottage with the small DSs on a beautiful beach on Anglesey. The fact that it was in the long hot summer of 1956 helped one hell of a lot.

MagpieCursedTea · 24/01/2015 20:41

Ooh you must live near me then! I'm in North Shields Smile
We're off to the Cairngorms for our holidays, not the seaside but I'm really looking for to it!

RecklessSerenade · 24/01/2015 20:58

We hired a log cabin in Aviemore at Easter (no beach but lochs) and we got about 6 ft of snow (had expected mild Spring sunshine!) but had an amazing week with tons to do for all ages without going too far. It was a fairly cheap holiday too.

KidTheKidder · 24/01/2015 21:00

Ooh Reckless can I ask who you booked your cabin through, please?

holmessweetholmes · 24/01/2015 21:10

Oh and Pembrokeshire. Best beaches - absolutely beautiful!

uggmum · 24/01/2015 21:22

Isle of Wight all the way. We went for 18 years and loved it. Loads to do and plenty of beaches to choose from.

Trickydecision · 25/01/2015 07:24

Just noticed that I described our lovely Anglesey holiday as being in the long hot summer of 1956. As I was eleven years old then, with, as it happens, no DSs yet, this should have said 1976.

ReeseWithoutHerSpoon · 25/01/2015 07:32

Another vote for Isle of Wight. It's never too busy and some lovely things to do and see and places to eat. Steephill Cove is one of my favourite places in the whole world.

We've stayed in various places over the 35 years we've been going but a log cabin at calbourne mill was really beautiful. Look it up OP, can't go wrong on iow. Use your club card points for the ferry and Von's your uncle!

ReeseWithoutHerSpoon · 25/01/2015 07:33

Bob, even!!!!

velourvoyageur · 25/01/2015 07:35

The one time we didn't go abroad, we went to Wales and climbed Snowdon and went to Anglesey, the beach was deserted and afterwards we went horse riding and went to a sort of open farm where you can hold rabbits ans guinea pigs. It was brilliant.

Any holiday where you can take horses out, hike, shop and swim is good though! UK def counts as a great destination.

Nerris · 25/01/2015 07:45

I also second North Norfolk, the beaches are huge and there is lots to do for children.

I also have had fabulous holidays in Cornwall (north and south ccoast) south Devon coast and I also love Dorset. We personally love Studland/Swanage area although the fossil beaches further along the west coast are great for kids to do fossil hunting.

I love the UK for holidays, it's amazing how different the coastline and beaches are just by travelling a few hours.

nameuschangeus · 25/01/2015 07:49

Northumberland. Something for everyone. Beautiful clean beaches. Castles. Shopping. Lovely countryside. Plenty of choices of where to stay. Attractions. Everybody will be happy there.

nameuschangeus · 25/01/2015 07:50

Urgh sorry I really should read the thread. Just seen OP is a bit too local for Northumberland!

ArsenicFaceCream · 25/01/2015 07:55

Not sure UK really counts as a holiday?

That's got to win some sort of prize for idiotic remark Grin

crapcrapcrapcarp · 25/01/2015 08:00

For those who've mentioned Aviemore and the Cairngorms, don't forget that there is a beach there - it's not unusual to be swimming in the loch in blazing sunshine while overlooked by snow-capped mountains!

And I think the pp who mentioned a ski lodge wasn't suggesting skiing (although there are dry slopes so you can have a go in summer if you want), just that they stayed there for their holiday. There really is an awful lot to do in this area, more than you could fit into a week (wildlife park complete with polar bears etc, steam railway, mountain railway, forest adventure park with fab water slides etc, soft play, pools, mountain biking, water sports, zip wire, high ropes park, clay shooting, quad biking, reindeer feeding, miles and miles of beautiful trails and paths, fishing, some decent shops, a cinema, folk park/museum, grass sledging ... tons and tons to do :)

Where / what was your best uk family holiday?
