Where / what was your best uk family holiday?

I am getting myself SO confused about where to go!

What was your best uk holiday as a family?

There are 7 of us (aged 3-70) and I think what we are after is a traditional seaside break with lots to do. Can we pinch your holiday ideas please? Grin

Steephill Cove on the Isle of Wight.

Dorset coast is another lovely seaside place.

You could also visit things on the way down/up if you're coming a distance too.

Pembrokeshire.

I forgot Tenby. Fantastic place. Great beaches and not as far or as crowded as Cornwall. It really is as pretty as it looks.

Ohwhat do you mind telling me who you booked the lodge through?

messyisthenewtidy · 24/01/2015 17:13

A bit of a trek but West Wales is lovely.

dementedma · 24/01/2015 17:13

Dumfries and Galloway!
Scenery, walks, dark skies park, wildlife, golf, beaches, horse riding, watersports, more scenery, castles, castles, castles, ice cream, seafood, woodland trails, biking, loads to visit.....
Just don't tell everyone. Its uncrowded and friendly and we have been several times with little ones, teens, adults and oldies. Something for everyone.

If you want to maximise your chances of good weather, Norfolk is a much better bet than Wales or Cornwall.

Of course the UK counts as a holiday, can't believe people are still snobbish enough to think it's only a holiday if it's abroad.

We've had some fantastic holidays abroad. We've also had some fantastic holidays in the UK. Our favourite UK holiday destination is Northumberland, but we also love Norfolk, Suffolk and Wales.

Thurlow · 24/01/2015 17:17

Not sure UK really counts as a holiday Grin Grin

Cliched I know, but we've had a fantastic few holidays in north Norfolk. General stay in and around Cromer as the beach is really nice. Feels like a good mix of things to do for all ages - some nice country estates, surfing clubs for older DC, seal watching, zoos, dinosaur adventure park, all sorts of things.

Last year, we stayed in a cottage on a working farm in north Devon. The kids loved it: they joined in the feeding of the animals, said hi to the llamas and collected eggs from the hens. Oh, and studiously avoided two rather ugly and very large turkeys!

The farm had a field running down to its own private beach - perfect for the kids.

The owners said they had large family groups returning year after year - I think there were 7 cottages of various sizes - all ex farmhand houses.

The accommodation was a little basic, but it was more than made up for by the farm itself, the views, and the nearby beaches. Oh, and it was the location for the TV version of the Famous Five in the 1990s (never saw Uncle Quentin though Grin)

You lot are bloody brilliant, thank you Grin

I haven't disappeared by the way, I'm busy looking up all the places you are suggesting. Ds wants a go on the iPad though the selfish bugger.... It's so much slower on my phone!

MyLadyKatherine - what a ridiculous thing to say - we've had some excellent holidays all over the UK Hmm

For littlies - I love Swanage or Weymouth.
Bournemoouth / Boscombe also nice.

There are lovely beaches in the North of Norfolk

Probably my favourite part of the country is Pembrokeshire - there is so much space on all of the Beaches, and so many to choose from.
I guess it depends a bit on where you are all coming from.

Cornwall is beautiful, but if you have to travel on a Saturday, it's an awfully slow long drive down the one road that goes there.

acrabadabra · 24/01/2015 17:21

Would've said Northumberland too but failing that the west of Scotland is hard to beat for beaches.
If you want to go south then I loved North Norfolk. Cromer was lovely and Hunstanton has that old seaside vibe with an aquarium and fairground. But all over huge, beautiful, deserted beaches.
Wales. We didn't quite make it to Pembrokeshire as we booked late but ended up in Cardiganshire which was amazing.
We've done hols in the uk with friends for years. In total 4 kids ages from 9-3 (last year anyway) and tbh we've never had a bad holiday. Love the uk but we're prob going to jinx our good luck this year as we've just booked to go to a villa in the canaries over Easter. Will do a uk break in August. Prob not Scotland due to the midge situation then.

NorbertDentressangle · 24/01/2015 17:23

Saundersfoot - an apartment right on the beach. It helped that the weather was great though.

Also love Cornwall but as we have relatives there I'm not classing it as a "holiday" for this thread as it's different when you're with extended family.

turdfairynomore · 24/01/2015 17:24

I'm very biased but would you consider NI? Beaches, surfing, great cities, beautiful countryside? And the ferry trip would make it seem like "abroad"!!

Indantherene · 24/01/2015 17:34

Southwold and Aldeburgh area where they filmed Grandpa in my pocket.

The New Forest

The Isle of Wight

Hayling Island

Indantherene · 24/01/2015 17:35

Rhossilli Bay and the Gower peninsula

SquinkiesRule · 24/01/2015 18:16

We went to the Isle of Man one year and loved it.

PetiteBateau · 24/01/2015 18:21

Whitby & Sandsend. Love it

KidTheKidder · 24/01/2015 18:24

Turd whereabouts in NI would you recommend? We're really keen on going but not sure what part.

Yika · 24/01/2015 18:33

Another vote for North Norfolk. Only recently discovered it - had a fabulous time around Burnham Market (posh), Brancaster (great for kite flying), Holkham (amazing beach) and Wells-next-the-Sea (pretty). The beaches are wonderful - huge and sandy.

I also really enjoyed the Norfolk Broads - so green, beautiful and there is a real holiday vibe in the summer. Lots to see and do.

Had great weather in both places so this may have coloured my view (positively).

I visited Southwold and Aldeburgh this year and especially enjoyed Southwold - lovely pier and traditional seaside entertainment - but really North Norfolk gets my vote. I want to go back and explore more. Perhaps Cromer next time.

isittheweekendyet · 24/01/2015 18:40

Mawgan Porth between Newquay and Padstow is lovely. We rented a flat right on the beach last summer

Woolacombe North Devon has a stunning beach. We had many lovely holidays there in rented cottages when my kids were younger.

Endler32 · 24/01/2015 18:51

Another vote for Cornwall ( North ), has amazing coastline, clean beaches, good surf and lots of sight seeing, oh and lots of great places to eat.

agoodbook · 24/01/2015 19:00

One of our best in UK was Paignton - lovely beach with beach huts to hire
Becky Falls for a walk/countryside
Dartmouth Steam railway
