If I'm attending a conference in Dumbarton?

I'm hoping to attend a conference in Dumbarton, I'll be using public transport. Where should I stay? I've not been up that for years and my geography is a little hazy.

I'll travel up the day before and back the afternoon that it finishes. I will be travelling from manchester.

Thanks.

Madcat, beardmore for a more luxurious stay. Radnor or west highway for budget stays, cheap and cheerful. Or just spend a tenner in a taxi and kip at mine Wink

KissMyFatArse · 20/01/2015 19:41

Oh kato is that how cheers? I've only been a couple of times. The back room or nightmares was were I done my glamorous socialising Shock

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 19:42

The Radnor used to do a mean Karaoke evening on a Friday if that sways your decision at all Madcat :o

Kato - Nellys and the Cutty were our fallbacks too lol

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 19:43

Nelly's was up the other end across from the courthouse, Cheers was down the Quay!

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 19:47

I don't know about you lot but this is killing me that I probably know you guys one way or another lol

I almost did a sneaky name change to out myself via PM :o

KissMyFatArse · 20/01/2015 19:50

Squtt, I am thinking of my facey folk and thinking ..... Are you's munsnetters too?!!!! Im so bloody nosey lol.

Lots of my friends went to st pats or vola but I went elsewhere...: but I need to know if I know anyone lol

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 19:53

I didn't go to either if those schools I went to DA :o

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 19:53

And I'm totally doing the same with my FB friends...

Appin · 20/01/2015 19:57

I appreciate no one was trying to be judgey, but it did come across a bit like that. Needless to say, I don't think Dumbarton is a shit hole. If I did I wouldn't still be here. I live in a lovely old house, in a quiet area where my kids walk to a lovely school. I don't think my choices have been too bad :) Also not sure it's fair to judge a whole town on the areas which lack desirability (for want of a better phrase!). Castle hill is not Dumbarton. Though I can understand why you'd want to move away if that's your only experience of the town.

Shame. The town has been such a victim of thoughtless post-war planning, but that's not our fault, it still has a lot to offer (mostly location and cheap house prices, not much in the way of nightlife left).

Intrigued to think I probably know you...

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:04

Appin we've only slagged off our own areas and been quite explicit. Dumbarton is a mixed bag of affluent and deprived areas. Many of my friends lived in gorgeous houses and I was very jealous, brucehill was a shit hole, I'm not going to get misty eyed about it, even though my dad is still in Dumbarton as are many of my friends.

How's that for a punny excercise from Mr Edwardson?

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 20:05

Appin I'm not from Castle hill, I lived in Bellsmyre but had way more bad experiences in Castle Hill where my DH is from. In my case certainly I got in with the wrong crowd at school which was a part of why I left. The friends I had were just not compatible with the life I wanted.

I do miss just jumping on the train to Glasgow for a day or nipping to Balloch park in the Summer but we are down once or twice a year and do get a bit "home sick" when we're there. Then generally something kicks off near the in laws (in the aforementioned crappy area) that changes our minds :o

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:10

How's that for a punny excercise from Mr Edwardson?

Perfect thanks. I'll file it next to the one I've already got from Miss Evans, for 'forgetting' my gym kit. Again.

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:12

I must say, life in Dumbarton has much improved since we got a marks and spencer and waitrose opened in Helensburgh ;)

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 20:15

You two will get us sent to TurkeyTits office wi' that attitude Wink

So we all went to the same school Shock

I moved away in 2006 so way before Wait rose but after M&S I think.

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:15

Haha! Miss Evans hated me! She told me I had no thistle award points and wasn't that a tragedy?

Nope, hand me another article about the cardiovascular system, I've done that one... And that one!

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 20:19

Haha my arch enemy was Mr Galetely (or Golikely as I called him "accidentally") Never a lesson went by where he wouldn't stamp his wee cowboy heel beside my desk to shut me up :o

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:22

Ah, the old school is gone now. So many wonderful memories -ahem-.

Miss Evans passed away a couple of years ago, a hall in the PE department of the new school is named after her I believe. That woman put me off exercise for life, at least that's what I tell myself.

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:22

Or bang that wooden stick on the desk with one leg up?

I loved that guy!

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:24

She knew how to work pastel track suits.

Rest in peace. I still have no thistle award points.

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:26

Now that IS a tragedy. I've got so many thistle award points I'm going to get Mr Arnold to tot them up for me on his pocket calculator. An early model, which he had to actually plug into the wall.

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:29

Haha!! He'll catch you in his blackboard mounted rear view mirrors!!!

Squtternutbaush · 20/01/2015 20:31

Well I hate to sound disrespectful but I heard that Mr Hammond also passed away in the last few years.

Neither of them particularly old and both of them were quite "pushy" PE teachers... Now that doesn't say much for exercise does it :o

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:32

Aw, he was a great teacher. You don't get character like that in teaching now.

He too has passed away, I wish I'd heard at the time, would definitely have made an effort to go to his funeral :(

Appin · 20/01/2015 20:32

This thread has turned into a right bundle of cheery news...

KatoPotato · 20/01/2015 20:34

Mr G? Oh no that's really sad, I would also have made an effort to attend. He was awesome, he liked me because I was a bit naff I think.
