Large Holiday House in UK?

Does anyone know of a really lovely Holiday House for a large family group? I've trawled all the usual sites and found some possibilities but wondered if anyone knows of any 'secret' places. I'm looking for something with at least six bedrooms, garden, child friendly, near the coast in southern England or Wales. For May half term (booking up fast it seems!).

Have you tried Airbnb?

how about www.amazingplacestostay.com/towers-llanfairfechan-conwy.php

We stayed HERE this year as a family group. The house and grounds are lovely and it has an indoor pool. The only downside was that you have to get in the car to go anywhere - the upside of this is that it was very quiet. We will definitely go back.

Have you looked at Landmark Trust? Amazing historic buildings. No tv or wifi (bonus!) and you get to be Lord/Lady of the manor!

No availability at the right size/location I'm afraid!

We stayed here, although I know its popular so may struggle for availability. You get shared use of pool, tennis courts, bags of space, they also have indoor games room and littlies room with ball pool etc.

House is lovely, very well kitted out.

Have a look at Groupaccommodation.com and bigholidayhouse.com these websites specialise in large properties and you should have plenty of choice. we have used both sites before and have found the places on there to be a wide variety of prices and types so should find something to suit. You will however find that May half term is manically busy this year. our usual places are already booked up thanks to the change in school holiday rules everyone is dashing for the same few weeks. don't get me started on how the prices have gone up either.....

Sheldrake, Sennen Cove, Cornwall.

Lovely but not big enough! Yes, I have found a few good places still available on those websites - just looking for some 'secrets'. And I've been given some great ones (thank you!) but all either too small or booked up.

you might have to compromise this year OP because of all the forward booking due to school holiday rules. perhaps book something almost right for this year and get the one that you really want for 2016. I kid you not many of my friends are doing this this year because everywhere has booked out so early.

irregularegular · 03/10/2014 14:40

And I thought this was a long way ahead!

it was a long way ahead last year but not any more thanks to Mr Gove. people looking next year will be struggling. at least you are thinking about it now not waiting until January. hope you find something. if you do please share so everyone knows what you found. does it have to be one big house or would you compromise and go for a cottage complex. there might be more available - just a thought.

Great Higham Barn in Kent was pretty amazing, not quite on the coast but near enough for a day trip.

Can recommended this place in N Devon. It used to be an old school friends family home.

We stayed at this place in Symondsbury, Dorset one October half term. It's absolutely huge,God knows how many people you could cram in if you tried, but a big rambling, shabby chic kind of place. Perfect for groups of friends staying together. Walking distance to local pub, and not far from Bridport and Jurassic coast. Given its size it's amazingly affordable.

I have stayed here twice for special occasions

It has a separate building in the garden with an indoor heated swimming pool. Just fab!

Thanks all. Sadly most of your brilliant suggestions were not available (I cannot believe how booked up everything is) and some were not affordable (family budget constraints turned out to be more of an issue than I thought). Anyway, I've booked this and I'm very happy with it:

Thank you to everyone for your help - all useful for another time, especially 'book early!!!). Assuming we feel an extended family holiday is something we want to repeat...
