Bristol - Sunday night dinner

We'll be in central Bristol (staying at the Holiday Inn Express) on a Sunday evening, does anyone have a restaurant recommendation, please? Google and Trip Advisor haven't been terribly helpful, so any suggestions welcome.

There are hundreds of restaurants around there, so to narrow it down a bit what sort of place are you looking for - cheap and cheerful, upmarket, child-friendly, British, ethnic, hipster, pub food?

Thanks exexpat... ideally something non-chain with a bit of character and atmosphere (we're going to the Ox a couple of weeks later, which looks like the sort of place I'll really like). Upmarket is fine, but so is cheap and cheerful, as long as it's good. I'm thinking no Indian, Chinese, Thai or pizza, as I can get them close to home, but I'm partial to good Italian or a bit of British. Child-friendly is okay, but not a priority. Good cocktails would be a bonus, but setting sail on the Monday - hangover is probably best avoided!

Just remembered this thread. Is it the Holiday Inn near Temple Meads station? It's mostly fast food and pubs in the immediate area (though I highly recommend Harts Bakery for coffee/cakes etc in the morning). Your closest interesting/upmarket options are probably www.severnshedrestaurant.co.uk or www.riverstation.co.uk which are both on the waterfront, about a ten minute walk away.

Then after that you either turn right towards Bristol bridge and have loads of options at the upper end of Welsh Back/King Street, e.g. Loch Fyne, Spyglass, Myristica (very good Indian), Glassboat and others, or if you carry on towards the main part of the floating harbour, you get to the Arnolfini arts centre, which has a very good bar/restaurant, or more or less opposite that (across the water) is Bordeaux Quay, which is modern European/British and also very good. My children would probably opt for ZaZaBazaar, on the same section of waterfront - massive all-you-can-eat international buffet place, but not exactly top-quality food.

(I would have recommended the Mud Dock cafe as being characterful and doing good food, but it doesn't do Sunday dinner - I think the others do, but you'd need to check)

Cowshed on Whiteladies Road

We had a fantastic posh meal out at the Cherry Duck bistro recently. Aqua is very nice too - I wouldn't class it as a "chain" as such but they do have 2 or 3 branches.

Goldbrick house on park street does good food and cocktails.

Sevenshed or riverstation both fab
