Inspiration needed for october half term - help!

Our usual holifay haunts are Wales, Lake District and Yorkshire.... want to go somewhere different though not too far down South like Cornwall or Devon. We live in Merseyside and have 2 children, 6 and 10.

Suggestions for places and days out would be brilliant! TIA.

Northumberland?

Devon is lovely and not that far from the NW. Took us around 3.5 hours to get to South Devon last year. BUT it is a pretty rainy part if the UK, so bear that in mind.

Dumfries and Galloway. Really not very far on from the Lakes.
