Scotland and Midges

Planning to go self catering caravan near Glencoe and the site has fantastic reviews apart from the midges which all claim to have been awful. I have two dc. As adults, DH and I can cope, but will it ruin the holiday for the dc?
Would this put you off or is it just going to be an evening thing so we just shut ourselves in the van type thing or will they get us day time too?
Would love to go to this part of Scotland but not if it ends up with dc being eaten alive.

I bought amazing repellent that really works. I can't recommend it enough. I also can't remember what it's called! I'm on the way to work, but I'll look when I get home. Or I may remember suddenly this afternoon.

The midges are bad this year as it was such a mild winter. The repellents worth looking at a Avon Skin So Soft or Jungle Formula.

Enjoy it though, Glencoe is stunning. Stay away from trees and water as midges are worst there

Oh dea - beginning to think I need to rethink this. It does look a fab campsite though.

Just bought Avon skin so soft - hope that's the best thing. Happy to cancel order if anyone thinks otherwise.

Smidge is the best thing I have tried. Get some netted hats and pray for a wee bit of wind to blow them away

I can't do the west coast in the summer at all -it's such a shame. The midges can be awful and they love me, so I end up miserable and stuck inside. Plus it only takes a couple, of the wee buggers inside the caravan bedroom and I wake up the next morning covered in bites. Personally I'd rather go somewhere where I don't have to wear a netted hat outside.

Another vote for Smidge, I used a combination of that and skin so soft last year on the west coast, no bites at all. Smoke keeps them away if any of you are smokers/keen bbq'ers

Yes, Smidge is the one I was going to recommend too. I don't know if it's available everywhere, but I got it in Tiso outdoor shop. It really works.

We go to Scotland a lot. Luckily lots of different insect repellents work well for midges - I use Skin so soft, but others in the family use a range of stuff. Long sleeves and long trousers can help. Midges like it a bit dark, so are worse in trees or when it's overcast. What you want is bright sunny weather (fingers crossed).

Glencoe is extremely beautiful. Do go; it's a very special part of the world. My DCs love it, even the one who is a midge magnet.
