Going self catering for a week to a village near Hawes .

What can people recommend.

Places to go walking, museums, pubs, food etc etc!

Hawes is beautiful and iirc not too far from Ingleton, which has the beautiful waterfalls to visit. Gorgeous place!

And the Blue John Caverns? Sure they are close too. We also walked a lot and saw a beautiful old viaduct. This was a good 10 years ago though!

Hardraw Falls Aysgarth - the falls there are brill. They filmed some of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves around these areas.

I like walking near West Burton.

The cheese place is worth a visit if you like cheese....

What date are you going?

The Blue John caves are in Castleton. Too far for a day trip.

Stump Cross Caverns rather than Blue John Caverns I think?
I used to know the area well 20 years ago
Ingleton has a heated outdoor swimming pool.
There used to be a rope factory and museum in Hawes when I was little - not sure if it is still there.
Sedburgh used to have an amazing fish and chip shop.

And its not far on the back road to Wharfdale. Grassington is a lovely village and there's nice walks by the river there. Or walks from Kettlewell.

Who are you going with Are there children? If so, what ages? Not being nosey, I just thought I might be able to make some age appropriate recommendations.....

Get yourself down to richmond falls and castle beautiful in this sunny weather. You can walk alone the river to easby abbey too x

There is a red squirrel sanctuary near Hawes. In theory you are meant to walk from Hawes, but we parked nearer to it and did about a 4 mile in total walk. The squirrels were gorgeous. My son managed it when he was about 6 (though did manage to fall flat on his face in a lake of cow manure -making it rather memorable).

Between Hawes & Ingleton is the famous Ribblehead Viaduct - where you can catch the train to Carlisle (or Appleby which is cheaper & not as far but you still get to see beautiful scenery). Lots of lovely walks around Ribblehead including Whernside.

If you come to Ingleton (where I live) tea & cakes at Frumenty & Fluffin (near the Co-op) is a must - watch out - the cakes can be v. large. Their soup & scones are also delicious.

Re White Scar Caves, it is good but also Ingleborough Cave is equally good and there is a lovely walk up to it from Clapham - which is a fab village to walk around with a lovely playground.

Ingleton Open Air swimming Pool is great - particularly if you can go outside of weekends. It has a fab playground next door. If you go past the entrance to the pool, there is a lovely part of the river to go paddling.

Highly recommend Forbidden Corner especially as you've got kids - I've never been anywhere like it. Hawes fish and chips some of the best ever. Fabulous walks, drive over one of the passes to Swaledale - Buttertubs is the most famous but some of the others more dramatic. whatever you do I'm sure you'll have a great time, one of my favourite parts of the world.

Reeth, swaledale and Arkengarthdale are beautiful.
