Week in coastal Devon but where?

So we are down in the south west this summer to visit family and I thought we may as well stay on for the week and have a holiday. We (DH, DS with go is 1 and our two small dogs) fancied going somewhere so coastal. we need a bit of life around us and so we aren't reliant on getting in the car each time but need somewhere we can walk the dogs too. I know north Devon from childhood and fancied Appledore or Bideford but have heard they are looking a bit dated. I don't know south devon as well but pondered about Dartmouth? It would be nice to be able to walk to a beach or harbour or something and have a few cases or pubs.

If you know this part of the world - Would you go North or South Devon? Appledore or Dartmouth? Where else might be good?

I am a big fan of the South Hams - Hope Cove is a favourite place.
HTH!

South Devon has it all. Try the English Riviera app. A base in the Paignton/Torquay/Brixham area would be ideal, with Dartmouth just a few miles away.

Torbay is a fantastic family friendly place with plenty to do for everyone. Amazing coastal walks with the dog, plus plenty of parks such as Cockington.

Beaches to visit include Goodrington (north sands is dog friendly all year), Broadsands, nearby Blackpool Sands, Meadfoot (dogs allowed at north end).

Exmouth a good bet, you can walk dogs on the estuary beach & the common nearby.

We stayed near paignton which was a good place to get to Dartmouth and totnes from. Good zoo. Love sidmouth and budleigh salterton too.
