Getting into central London

Hi all dh needs to get into central london for the day as cheaply as poss. We are from devon. Train is extortionate. National express reasonably cheap and this is an option and will work for one day that we need it. However I was wondering if there is any sort of bus park and ride scheme that operates in london? Ie parking on the outskirts and bus it in?

London is so big that it would take ages to get in from the outskirts by bus. I don't know of a park and ride scheme, and I suspect that's why.

I live in West London & I'm not aware of any such scheme. It's probably cheapest to catch a coach as you're planning.

There are some specific coach services that run for commuters, for example Oxford Tube, and I have colleagues who commute by coach from Bournemouth and Kent, but I don't know how accessible these are to one off travelers.

If you're driving from Devon I presume he'd be driving along the M4.

If he wants to drive all the way into London to the outskirts of the central congestion zone and then walk/tube/bus to his destination, then the Park Lane car park is about £25 a day, I think. Less per hour, of course. It's just south of Marble Arch tube station on the (red) Central Line, or North of Hyde Park Corner on the (blue) Piccadilly Line.

If he wants to park on the outskirts of London, I'd look for car parks near Piccadilly Line stations. Heathrow Airport is the furthest out on the Piccadilly, but I presume the parking there for a day is a lot more?

I hate to suggest it but try Parkatmyhouse . Com, you could find a space either centrally or out by the end of the tube and catch tube in.

Could he drive to Reading and take the train from there? It's only about a 30 min journey from there, and Devon to Reading is easy enough.

Thanks guys all really good ideas! My dad has a casting in central london (not sure of details as yet so don't know where) then if she gets the shoot I'm presuming that will be central london area as well so trying to plan for everything!

Ok found a space on that parkatmyhouse we page it's on belgrave place so near Victoria, but what is driving that close to the centre like? Dh is fairly experienced driver but is there any sort of nutty one way systems or will we make it in one piece? We will prob get the bus down for the casting but would quite like to drive if she gets the shoot as unsure how long we will be there for so better to drive I think and park up

If you are from Plymouth or Exeter I would advise getting the megabus rather than national express.
People think the megabus is crap but it's pretty much the same as national express but half the price.
Also, check the times.. Sometimes you can get a megabus GOLD which is often the same price as a standard megabus but you get refreshments, wifi and power sockets.... And nicer seats.

And FYI of you're going to drive to London and park I would recommend parking somewhere like Westfield car park for the day and getting the tube wherever you need to go from there. It's £5 per day on weekends and £8 a day during the week I believe.

There's a Westfield in shepherds bush and another one in Stratford. (West and east). Both on the central line.

Megabus is brilliant. Dd1 uses it all the time to get home. Exeter to London Victoria usually c.£6.00 but can be half that!

If you are planning to drive into central London, beware of the congestion charge!

I wouldn't recommend driving into CL anyway if your not used to it- can be very full on especially during rush hour.
