Normally we go to Cornwall (round Padstow / Polzeath) for holidays but have decided to try Devon this year as can't face the traffic. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to stay? Don't mind North or South Devon - preferably house / cottage, reasonably near a sandy beach in an area similar in feeling to Padstow (maybe slightly less busy though!).

We stay in SE Cornwall near Looe which is only about half an hours drive from Plymouth on the A38 not sitting on the A30 car park. Not sure if this is of any interest to you but Looe is lovely and there are lots of great beaches around there too. Not at all as busy as Padstow but we like it like that. we usually stay here but if they are full we use the cornwall tourist board site or the looe tourist information office for ideas. hope you find something good.

Salcombe is beautiful.

Salcombe is indeed beautiful but usually expensive and full of traffic as well as Boden crowds. Have a look at Instow for something in the north or Lyme Regis for the south

I know Lyme Regis is in Dorset before anyone gets back to me but its right on the border so counts in my book
